Re: What new booty have you acquired?

looks like a cool board tony! i esp like the top loading inputs in the back for ease of use. also looks like it's in great condition too.

@brian, congrats on the xox purchase, everyone i know that has one seems to really like it. i still kick myself for not buying the kit a few years back cause the price of them has def gone up a few hundred.

worship the potentiometer.

Yes it's very similar in construction to the Seck mixers which are also british, they're not the same company though, apparently.

Just ordered an x0xb0x. I figured I should have some sort of mono synth and I reckon this little thing will fit my music and studio well, more than for instance a Pro One. Quite exciting for me, as I've not often spent more than 300 euro on a single piece of equipment and definitely not ever before in an online shop big_smile

Where did you order x0xb0x?

Re: What new booty have you acquired?

I looked at 2nd hand kits, some had interesting mods but after talking to Rude66 and looking at some pics I got from sellers I reckoned my safest bet was getting the Mode Machines one, rather then one that might or might not have been build by somebody with decent soldering skills.

I ordered it from Music Store in Cologne where I found the best deal and where I could be sure there was no hassle with deducting the VAT.
But you can find them with more sellers, including ebay stores. There's a list of sellers on the Mode Machines site: http://www.modemachines.com/de/distribution/

Re: What new booty have you acquired?

let us know your experiences with the XoxBox Brian when you receive it! The latest SOS issue had a very favourable review .. I'm tempted too ..

Re: What new booty have you acquired?

Modemachines x0x looks identical to Technology Transplant's...

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm92/SCSIcide/techtransplants.jpg

same accessories included or no?

Re: What new booty have you acquired?

Well they are all based on a DIY kit, as far as I know it's just different companies that assemble them and they might use some different parts. I therefore reckon that a review with a Modemachine will not entirely mean the same conclusion applies to the Technology Transplant build, or a home build one for that matter. As for extra's, I think the Mode Machine also comes with a psu and cables.
I'll hop to the newsstand tomorrow and see if I can get a hold of that SOS review. Rude and Freek did an extensive comparison between 2 x0xboxes and 2(?) 303's, and I believe they were quite impressed with the clone but I'd rather have them tell us their conclusions.
I'm sure there will be differences between the real thing and the clone, (as well as I am sure that there are slight differences between two real 303's) but searching the web, listening to different examples and opinions, I think this might be one of the best clones and will do fine in the mix together with drums, processed by an analog mixer and some good old master tape. But so far these are just my expectations as a highly anticipating buyer, I can't say anything until I actually fooled around with it.

Re: What new booty have you acquired?

From what I've heard, any differences between x0x and 303 sound-wise are really negligible. I'd like to hear afterthoughts if possible once you've taken it all in, as I might be making room for one soon.

Re: What new booty have you acquired?

The x0x I used to have sounded quite different from my 303 side by side, BUT I think that had more to do with the particular modded x0x that I had than anything.   Regarding technology transplant built x0x's, I've read their OS's are kind of screwed, so you can't update it, put in the sokkos OS, etc.  Something to keep in mind when shopping.  I REALLY wish there was an OS that allows the x0x to be programmed exactly like a 303, but it seems that's some sort of heresy among x0x'ers who are convinced that the tb's sequencer is a piece of shit that needs to be abandoned.  Oh well.

The 303's sequencer is what makes me want one so bad.

Re: What new booty have you acquired?

the 303's sequencer is a huge pain in the ass to program. if you can get the same feel in an easier os, im all for it. thats what the xoxbox does.
soundwise, we came to the conclusion that the xoxbox sounded like either a restored or a new 303. it behaves a little different than the 303, but in small margins that are likely caused by aging components in the 303's. i've heard 303's that sounded a lot more different from each other than the xoxbox-303 combo we did. in the 303 allstars we had 6 303's and all sounded very different.
mine came from xoxsource in the US, and looks identical too..

Re: What new booty have you acquired?

my experience when weve tested the X0X vs tb303 was that the X0X came very very close. It has a few spots when pushing the resonance that sound different from the original. TB303s that are used a lot tend to sound a bit muddier and less fresh than unused models or clones. And like Ruud says: almost every tb303 sounds different but I was still able to hear a few things in the X0X that dont belong to the original sound. Thing we didnt really tested 100% was the way to program it (like stretched notes) because I can image it can sound different because of different functionality of the sequencer. Still its the best clone there is and you really need a close listnen to hear the difference. Another plus are the added functions that are not on the original. Big minus: the shitty and ugly build quality (its not build to last).

Re: What new booty have you acquired?

Yeah the build can be a worry. But you can build or order a custom case.

I guess thats no bad idea if you want to use it live, maybe a custom flightcase is even better (to protect the knobs etc)

Sweet.  Gonna have to keep an eye on that - the tb-303 sequencer is a requirement for me to get another x0x.  I've never found it to be too much of a pain to program, but then again - [knockonwood]the keys on my tb still seem to be ok [/knockonwood].  I really dig programing the pitch data, and then experimenting with various timings until it sounds good to me.  Can't really do that with the x0x as it is.
