Topic: Tenori-on

Has anyone seen that new Yamaha device? I am wondering if it would be useful in a studio or is it just more a novelty act step-sequencer?

Put my hands on last week for 10 minutes ..
Seems something pretty unlimited about sequences
Can only host very "short sounds"
Didn't go into it at all
Fashion designed for sure..

Maybe this one seems more promising?

I know you can set it up to use w/ MAX/MSP so I imagine it can be versatile. Not sure though.

Anyone used one?

Do it your way, because everyone else is just weird.

That's the picture in my head every weekend night when I wish I was out but at home instead.

Never used one, but I think it's uses are pretty unlimited. The site says: 'each is a reconfigurable grid of backlit keypads which connects to a computer. interaction between the keys and lights is determined by the application running on the computer. there is no hard-wired functionality.'

So you use it in conjunction with a piece of software that stand for instance in between the knobs and your software of choice, whether it be MAX or Ableton. The software in between determines the behaviour of the keys, which you have to design/program yourself.

I read somewhere that the Tenori-on can also be used as the central sequencer of your studio, could be quite intereseting to experiment with. I think however the designers' idea of interaction is quite a personal way of looking at composition, so it should fit your taste.

Re: Tenori-on

Hmm i dunno about the Tenori-on, i have read more about it online and except from the over-desgined looks i am not really impressed but maybe that i need to get my hands on one of them for a good judgement.

The monome is cool, but i can never get my head around on Max/MSP i prefer making music and not programming although there are already a whole lot of interesting apps online for this device.

Oh well now we are showing off cool interfaces, what about this:

Re: Tenori-on

Dunno, I think they did a nice job trying to find other ways of manipulating 'blocks' of musical stuff and make it look interesting and maybe understandable on stage. But honestly I don't get musically triggered much by the looks of it. To me it looks like I would be bored after half an hour of turning and shoving blocks around. And I think it's a personal choice to be willing to perform with these things, I think not everybody would like to perform this way. What about you?

Re: Tenori-on

Yeah i know what you mean, the cubes are def. a novelty act right now. Although it gives you live performances something extra... if that is what you want that is wink

Yep using a sixty four here, it's limitless as it only sends and receives OSC messages to/from computer, everything is built in software. The real power is in the very creative and 'different' apps that the community build and release.
Most of them are max/map patches, but both Python and VST libs exist

I love it
