Topic: Mac help and related questions topic

Hi,

i'm sure we had this helpful thread, but i couldn't find it.

well,
i have a problem with my mac, and it seems like i need to install the OS again
can't find the installation CD, i'm using 3 years old MacBook Pro,
is it possible to use a new Mac installation CD?
basically i'm sure there is no problem but i know the new ones have new features that my machine doesn't have

Re: Mac help and related questions topic

i had a similar case 2 months ago. i had to re-install everything but i'd lost my installation cd. i asked apple for a new one and they said i'd have to buy a new Mac OS X cd which costs 149euro. i luckily found my cd before i did so.

Re: Mac help and related questions topic

Yes I'm sure you can use a 10.5 (Leopard) install disc as opposed to 10.4 (Tiger). All intel macs are compatible with either. Leopard needs 1Gig RAM though. The only thing that you will not be able to benefit from is increased trackpad gestures (i.e: rotating with 2 fingers, or the three finger swipe in Safari ...)

Also Mac OSX install discs don't have any copy protection (as far as I know) so you shouldn't need an install key or shit like that.

yes this is why i wasn't sure about the whole thing.
anyway i'm off to the installation
see you on the other side...

Re: Mac help and related questions topic

no other side
the installation cd isn't fit
after restarting and pressing C it says
"can not install this OS on this computer"

Re: Mac help and related questions topic

I think the install disc that came with the mac is uniquely locked to the computer itself, only retail discs are unlocked. You can probably do it in target disc mode, which connects a 2nd Mac to yours using firewire and makes the 2nd mac a source computer for your mac. That way you should be able to use it's drive and it's os disc to install OSX on your mac. Just google for it, it should be explained somewhere.

edit: I assume you used some other persons install disc, not a retail disc.
If all fails just wait a few days, as you might know Snow Leopard is due to be released in September.

Re: Mac help and related questions topic

i did use other persons install disc
i'm not sure i can wait few more days, this machine is so slow now...
usually i'm waiting a little before updating OS, so apple could fix some bugs, etc.

Re: Mac help and related questions topic

Mule Driver, sorry to hear that the install disc didn't work.

Re: Mac help and related questions topic

the install discs that come with a mac are usually locked to that particular model. that's why the pirate bay is your friend. if it's still open (seems to be down atm).

i do suggest you install 10.5 on that machine, it's definitely the way to go.

Re: Mac help and related questions topic

finally received a retail installation CD
but an "argent" return job had pop up so i'll have to wait few days with installation.
this machine is so slooooooow....

Re: Mac help and related questions topic

had the same with 10.4... bought a new one (mine was from 2001).
Usually it doesn't really help to install the os again (it's not a pc) but I hope you get it fixed. Have you tried Onyx to clean everything?

Invisible HDD

Launch ScriptEditor and paste this into the script window:
------------------------------------------

tell application "System Events"
set visible of disk "Macintosh HD" to true
end tell

tell application "Finder" to quit
delay 1
tell application "Finder" to launch

Re: Mac help and related questions topic

Check the Error Console for any script related errors. It is just JavaScript.

Can you view this without any problem? This would help isolate it down.

I have a honker of a question for anyone who does hardware related shit, I have a PowerBook G4 (PPC) and I need to do serious work on replacing/fixing the heatsink (it rattles and heats up too much)

I really love the styling on the small PowerBooks and considered even gutting it to make it a new computer. Does this just sound stupid though?

Re: Mac help and related questions topic

Not as much as that time you got a unicycle wink
