Topic: good distortion?

any recommendations for some good distortion pedals? i've been enjoying distortion more lately....been using a shity red boss distortion pedal i have, and occasionally my bandmates big muff....but was wondering what people here use and would suggest...

Re: good distortion?

overdriven mixer channels can be good. especially mackie (if you like the particular sound it gives)

you can also use 2 channels on high gain, and take the insert out of one back into a 2nd channel for full blown distortion. though you'll need a y-lead for that.

Re: good distortion?

Some of my favorites:

US Big Muff - Hot
Russian Big Muff - Fierce
Fender Blender - the most unusable destroyer of notes i.e. AWESOME
Boss HyperFuzz - One of the few decent boss distortions
ZVex Fuzz Factory - Smmmmoooooooootttthh
ProCo Turbo Rat - Dirt
MXR Blue Box - Destroyer of speakers, chiptune sub-octave fuzz.

OR. you can buy one of my handmade ones wink

cool man, that has a rocking sound to it!

I prefer to use a wavemultiplier

Re: good distortion?

lots of the models maiovvi mentiones are modelled in the digitech distortion factory pedal:

http://www.digitech.com/products/Pedals/DF7.php

I got it aswell, and it sounds, to me, okay. you got 3 modus (selecting while powering) 2 x mono out (1x amp out + 1 x mixer out + vintage amp sim added (like fender amps). and 2 stereo modus. (mono in stereo out)

I like the 3 band eq on it so you can finetune it for drums processing...great for gabber and hardcore hehe. This thing sounds great on a TB303 (or clone)aswell really nasty. And the different models gives you a wide range of choice, because each type of sound needs a diffrent type of distortion with different harmnocs andso, for drums you need a low end disto and for synth a more brite one and less noisey.

But much depends on what you are gonna process, for buss efx or masterinserts, there are some other stuff that works better. I got also a culture vulture (10 x tubes inside) dual mono rackdistortion that is top off the bill stuff, but sounds really great and warm. But thats maybe too expensive for what you are seeking. And its not merely a distortion but also a tubedriver, but if you switch it into overdrive with a knob it is instant apaocalypse hehe

Re: good distortion?

we got a bunch of different ones at the store you can try out.

for me personally i always used a ross distortion pedal. it is very mellow and smooth.

Re: good distortion?

Metasonix Scrotum Smasher

Don't know if it's good, but I like the name

Re: good distortion?

scrotum smasher's are only produced in a batch off 20.

Re: good distortion?

Well I guess they're not smashing many scrotums then.

Always been curious about that Metasonix stuff. Never played with any of it in person. That tube synth (S-1000) looks pretty cool though.

Re: good distortion?

The best distortion unit I had in the past was a mixer. Seriously.
It was the Behringer MX8000, the 24 channels big box. Cold, crappy, ugly, name it whatever you like.
But the possibility of taking the post fader out of each channel from the top and cascade it to all the other channels
one after the other made it perhaps the best distortion unit I ever had.
The best thing I did with this system was to cascade all the 24 channels and amplify the ground noise of the mixer
itself by adding the gain of the cascaded channels. Some push button action on the last channels (near 0 db!), some delay and effects and voila', minimalistic experimental clicky electronics at its finest smile
And think about it when I had some real signal coming from some real instrument instead of the ground noise smile smile

Re: good distortion?

Yes the Behringer gain is legendary especially when you do midsweeps...the soundcraft spirit folio did a good distortion too

But the best I heard was a Digitech VCS-1 not a distortion unit but a tube vacuum processor that can distort very "creamy".

whoa, nice looking fuzz pedal Maiovvi! do you ship to the US? I might have to save up for one.

i found that the Way Huge Swollen Pickle which is only $160 has a semi-close fuzz to the $$$ zvex.

also, for $150, my friend's company makes this Fuzz War pedal which is like a Big Muff on PCP. we have a few of his pedals and they are all nasty and dirty and have more gain than any other pedal in my collection. http://www.deathbyaudio.net/

and i've heard good things about Dr Scientist pedals too, http://www.drscientist.ca/pedals/frazz

as well as Mad Professor's Mighty Red Distortion which sounds incredible but is also $$$.

yeah I had that one aswell, maybe as an alternative (because the VCS1 is very rare) a SPL Charisma. tubewarmer/driver specially designed to do some sort sim tape saturation....very good on Hihtas and on Snares.

Also i used to have: A jackson JX3, 2 channel tube driver/amp with one bright channel and one shred channel...sound very ruff also...but again not found easily

Man! Fuck yeah, the DBA stuff is great, they are miles ahead of me.

I will ship to the US, however I don't have any of that particular circuit anymore (they sold out really quickly, which was definitely good.) There will most likely be an updated version being released next year.

In the meantime I'm working on two things: A ring modulated dual theramin thing which is still at the design stage and a Germanium Fuzz with a few bells and whistles, which I'm waiting for the boards to be delivered.

I love Fuzz, it's the one thing I won't compromise on.

For anyone interested I used to work for this guy: www.bugbrand.co.uk when I lived in Bristol.

Some people here might be interested in his modular stuff.

amazing sounding pedals.

Re: good distortion?

In my days, i was using this:

Companion FUZZ BOX FY-2.

Re: good distortion?

@neferos, that's a damn fine looking fuzz! old school box design too!

@maiovvi, def keep me posted about any new fuzz pedals you create, i always like to look out for new fuzzes. and that ring mod theramin sounds nuts, good luck with the build!

bugbrand! i really wanted a bug-crusher for a while but the company didn't have them in stock so i ended up buying a "BITRMAN" box by alesis.

Re: good distortion?

one i haven't seen here yet is the ibanez ts808.. bonus points for the name alone..

Re: good distortion?

deviever cherry popper!

ah the bug crusher, not really a bitcrusher, it was a sample rate reducer, though it did have some characteristics that were more useful, the LFO stuff which gave it a kind of Gristleizer sound.

The BITRMAN is one hell of a unit, I can't believe they stopped making them, it was the only one that didn't pass through my hands. I still have the smashup, the phlangr and the ampliton. The ampliton is especially useful for MBV esque sounds

@rude66 - Yeah! the Tubescreamer, a classic without a doubt

Re: good distortion?

i forgot i have a tube screamer sitting on my shelf. it's the crappy plastic footswitch TS10 model though and not the nice TS808.

i wish alesis built those Bitrmans and Amplitons more like stomp boxes and less like table top devices, i suppose one could always just re-shell them though..

@bankie, yeah man, devi-ever makes some wicked pedals...

Re: good distortion?

I ended up just buying one of those bypass loopers from Napalm Pedals. I've got an AirFX running into a Boss Metal Zone (the distortion is crap, the EQ is great) on the pedal board of this band I play in.

Bypass loopers are awesome.

tubescreamer? i remember it as the most annoying pedal, i didn't like it... maybe i should check it again

i use fuzzface and some Czech distortion called George Dennis
another weird stomp box here is DOD's Buzz Box it's kind of ringmod/dist
driving gained signal through Electro-Harmonix Microsynth can give nasty distorted sound as well
(especially for drums)

Re: good distortion?

I would kill for a Buzz Box, they go for stupid money these days.

Re: good distortion?

The Daphon overdrive and distortion pedals are pretty much clones of classic Boss ones and they're dirt cheap.  They do two versions, a cast metal case one and a plastic case one. You can get the plastic version (branded Whote-Note) of the Overdrive for 10 pounds on Ebay UK (see item 300318606137).  The guitarists like to mod them (see http://www.dextermods.com/daphon.php.  I've got one, sounds great on guitar but not tried any electronics through it yet, need to get it back off my mate first.
