Topic: The Vinyl-On-Demand appreciation society

This thread is dedicated to official repress label in general
Talks about their releases, and possible interesting polemics

If you're like me, a happy subscriber of Vynil-On-Demand, you probably just received (or soon will) the 2nd over 3 part of the yearly sub.
Opening the big cardboard box, the same ritual everytime, discovering all those insanely well crafted boxes, puting the records in their distinctive sleeves, then days of listening, etc..
The choice of the tracks compiled also is always great: rare and unreleased material, gathered in some with the hits (but not necessarly, those are not commercial best-of)
To summarize, you can really feel love and care in those records, not greed and fame seek like with other labels
Hurray to great F. Maier

Re: The Vinyl-On-Demand appreciation society

Yes, Frank is a star. Definitely the label of the year for me with his Polyphonic Size box.
Have you already received the second part of the sub? I can't wait to have an ear on Crash Course In Science...

lärm macht spass!

Re: The Vinyl-On-Demand appreciation society

waiting for the second batch .......
boxes are the shit .

Re: The Vinyl-On-Demand appreciation society

the VOD packages are like a very thick book to me...they intimidate me to the point i never start to read the damn book.
didnt get a subscription this year, bought the polyphonic size (still have to listen to it) will probably buy the cash course in science as well but that will be it this year if i dont hear any rave reviews ofr the other releases.

to be honoust i'm a bit fed up with all those releases. releasing tape material or unreleased stuff i can appreciate but vinyl reissues that offer nothing extra i can miss like a toothache.

dont mean to piss on your parade AI but i'd prefer more new stuff to be released like that incredible venus noir compilation, the upcoming xeno & oaklander lp etc.

Re: The Vinyl-On-Demand appreciation society

it's great, that's the one i started with
the sound quality is very good
huge tracks...

@the sword
of course new stuff... but i was focusing here on the re-releases specialist labels
also <ith those, you just pass the average way of doing stuff: here, most of the time, the artists are directly involved in the process.
And this hagiography of VOD is also to point out that lately, a lot of boxes flourish here and there, most of the time a way to fleece more the collectors, for no real reason other then records in a cardboard box...

Re: The Vinyl-On-Demand appreciation society

Parcel at home .. but not me !
Grrrr
VOD/Frank rokks and so is the smell of the freshly inked/printed covers

Re: The Vinyl-On-Demand appreciation society

i havent seen any cardboard boxes outside VOD..am  i missing something?

Re: The Vinyl-On-Demand appreciation society

I am not sure what I should think about it. I am a bit confused by all these boxsets - it`s simply too much. I was at a friends home who "was" subscriber no.2 (!) and he really has no more space for these boxes, that`s one of the reasons why he canceled his subscription and he only buys the ones he really need.

But yes, VOD is a high quality archive label and does a great work. I can speak for myself: I never had a subscription. It`s a pity somehow, because I missed some cool releases already... I wished some of the box-sets would be re-pressed as LP or 2LP, most of the time I want only a part of the tracks, or I don`t like the bonus...or don`t need another shirt...even if I liked to see it on your body, agence. wink

In the end I have to mention that I am maybe not so deep into all the stuff anymore that comes out at VOD or Anna Logue or...           makes it easier to say `no` sometimes.

I admire the craft and dedication of VOD, fo sho.

but
Nightmare future scenario: all new vinyl = lavish subscription reissues.

lately there are more and more... I almost suspect that you want me to name which ones are useless... wink
and for exemple, there's another Nurse With Wound box just released, same price approx as the VOD one, but with very very less material....

Re: The Vinyl-On-Demand appreciation society

reminiscent is what started the hype... both the music & the boxset itself for that matter. props to marc for that great release!

Re: The Vinyl-On-Demand appreciation society

and as we have to watch for gender neutral language these days...perhaps to rename this thread into the more label neutral "box set appreciation society" ? tongue

PS the sword in question is called a kris

Re: The Vinyl-On-Demand appreciation society

hahaha, no, that's the point, no boxset obsession here...
a kris ? you didn't told me that last time we had a pizza (with 2 fishy swiss guys)

and I don't think Reminiscent has nothing to do with VOD: it's a great compilation, very good track selection, but when it was released, Frank had already started his work, focusing at this time on Die T

Re: The Vinyl-On-Demand appreciation society

did we have a pizza with two fishy swiss guys? i think you might be confusing me with someone else...

i do recall us having a short talk outside De Unie, already told you then and there my name is kris on the forum!

both boxes were released round the same time indeed but frank focussed more on experimental music that first year...

anyways Born Bad had two excellent french compilations, any news on a new synth release from them?

perhaps franck is in talks with them too smile

i recall that twice (ptose & cultural amnesia) almost immediately after a release, VOD releases a more complete version. Perhaps VOD announced first, but if he didnt and i were Cartilage or Anna Logue i would have been incredibly pissed with both the artists and franck!

What really annoys me with the VOD releases is all the extra material he puts inside, t-shirts, live recordings etc.
Nice as extra's but now it's just forced onto you to generate more turnover. Same with the subscription principle. That is also why i dont really agree with the love & care opposed to greed & fame involved with the label. To me it seems a very smooth money making formula that exploits the collector urge to have everything from an artist.

Like now with that CCIS you also have to buy the live versions LP that i'm not really interested in. does anyone have a review for this release btw? how are the unreleased tracks?

Well.. all of those extras never disappointed me, demos, lives, whatever.. Remember the Polyphonic Size box, even rehearsal recordings sound so fucking great.

Re: The Vinyl-On-Demand appreciation society

@captain
thanks, you know how to make be blush...

@kris
Angelo Betti was the place, the swiss guys cosmo & faber, but i might be completly mixing my memory putting you there (i should make a boxset for every of my dutch trips)
CCIS box is great, though it didn't really needed a box: well, the live record is cool but not unforgettable, the unrelease tracks are great, though those demo version are very similar to the one on "Near Marineland". I think it's worth the buy anyway

Re: The Vinyl-On-Demand appreciation society

@AI yes you are seriously mixed up dude smile

concerning CCIS that's exactly what i mean. It could perfectly have been a 2xLP of 20 euro instead of the 70 euro boxset with t-shirt included it now is...

I have the same feeling about it although VOD does a great job, no doubt about that. Would really love to have the CCIS box but 70 EUR is a lot of money for me. And indeed: the catalogue is a bit too much, Frank goes too fast smile

Re: The Vinyl-On-Demand appreciation society

aaaaaa
just received the last batch of the year
the grouchies won't have anything to oppose this time on a box like the Bain Total/Die Form
with the prvious Etant Donnés box, a great occasion to get almost all the catalogue of this amazing label, without a tape player and a huge amount of money...
