Topic: SLABS 100 - Flemming Dalum - Space Odyssey 2010

http://www.slabsofthetabernacle.com/images/323.jpg

We wanted to make our 100th mix that bit more special so we asked one of the most famous Italo collectors and master of multi-layered mixes – Flemming Dalum – if he would do it for us. We also requested that he included no Italo in it. He kindly agreed and got stuck in about it, digging through his extensive record collection every night, adding more and more to the length of the mix. A few months later we received much more than we expected – a two and a half hour epic masterpiece to get lost in, time and time again.

The final cut contains many different styles: Disco, Euro Disco, Cosmic, House, Acid, New Beat, Wave, Early Techno and Hip Hop.

Thank you Flemming.

“I ran into “full capacity” on my system !!! - Ableton LIVE couldn’t hold more than this 160 tracks which was split up into over 4300 samples in one session…. so now I know “the TOP limit” :-)

My plan was not to make the most rare mix ever and still give no tracklist. I hope it might inspire people to listen carefully and spot some of those 160 records. It’s been great fun for me to go looking deeper in my collection, in other sections than the Italian.
Anyway I really hope you and everyone will enjoy this adventure….”

Awww i meant it like this: Britain is no Vilcabamba - valley of longevity and residents of 135 years - with the average Brit lifespan being 77 years. So, a birthday card from the queen is a rarity and equates exceptional and unique longevity. Pure special likes.  tongue

Re: SLABS 100 - Flemming Dalum - Space Odyssey 2010

big_smile  this mix is cool as hell and i'm only 10 minutes in!

Re: SLABS 100 - Flemming Dalum - Space Odyssey 2010

incredible mix

Re: SLABS 100 - Flemming Dalum - Space Odyssey 2010

Played it like ten times already and it is absolutely insane. "If you had to go living on the moon and you could bring only one mix with you ... "  I'd take this one for sure.
The way you compressed "Sit On Acid" into just two beats, beefed up "L&O Even Now to something better than it already was, the way you gave the whole mix such a distinct signature while hardly using any Italo is truly jawdropping.
Man this is deadly material! Top notch job Flemming !!

Yes, huge selecting/editing work with that definitive FD imprint indeed .. Some serious flirting with Italo moments however haha..
Thxxx and bravo Mr Flemming !

Re: SLABS 100 - Flemming Dalum - Space Odyssey 2010

I'm only 30 minutes into listening to the mix but it sounds good so far.
Very well mixed as always
(sometimes I would actually like it to be not as smooth - don't get me wrong, but I'd like a bit more "going on" if you know what I mean: more daring transitions and more vocal parts)

Flemming could possibly go on forever playing "italo that's not from Italy". I guess he owns all of them too smile
Total Toly, Mozzart, Cappella (was it Helyom Halib I heard?) and so on.
I consider them kinda italo although I know they are perhaps not made by italian artists or originally released on italian labels.

Excellent mixing and selection.
And making a 155 minute mix as good as this one deserves some extra respect.
Thanks man!

Re: SLABS 100 - Flemming Dalum - Space Odyssey 2010

Damn, Annie Anner's "The Human Race" at 1:20 something (?) is such a slick track.

I haven't heard it in years (but I do own the vinyl - in two copies if I remember it correctly...)

Edit: And "Body machine" by Adolphson-Falk somewhere at the end - I didn't see that one coming...

Hey Marco thx

Cheers Don – already some “heavy action” in my inbox  wink

>grreat!!

Thanks D..... but mostly wellknown stuff tho

Hey Gustaf – Thanks for your feedback....
I noticed your good point regarding the smoothness – gonna give it a thought...

>Flemming could possibly go on forever playing "italo that's not from Italy".
>I guess he owns all of them too
Yes  cool

>Total Toly, Mozzart, Cappella (was it Helyom Halib I heard?) and so on.
Correct – well ok Cappella and Helyom Halib is not included

>I consider them kinda italo although I know they are perhaps not made by italian artists or
>originally released on italian labels.
Yes interesting.
I’ve often noticed the same oppinion here in Denmark, mostly amongst younger italo freaks or collectors...

I fully respect this view / position – no problem at all.

“There must be room for us all”...

But to me Mike Mareen, Bobby O, Fancy, Gino S., Patrick C...etc...etc. has nothing to do with italo !
.....it German disco, Euro disco, Canadian disco etc...etc.. sorry

Well ok i must admit that the style/sound is kind of similar to original italo...do doubt...but still no italo for me.
Hehe sorry again I AM a freak  lol

Thanks

I’ve just recieved a request from a local friend regarding the Annie Anner 7inch – please PM me if you still have an extra copy for sale

>Edit: And "Body machine" by Adolphson-Falk somewhere at the end - I didn't see that one coming...
Well I think they made some great tracks – and I wanted to include one of them in a mix for some time.

> definitely checking it, cheers!
Cheers Jacderida

> Yes, huge selecting/editing work with that definitive FD imprint indeed ..

Cheers P
Hehe well yes .... kind of similar to the original italo sound  cool
Actually i started out with selecting only harder records in my collection...
– but after some time I stumbled over more and more disco records....and I "got trapped"

I hope the big variation in different styles will make the mix “more interesting” or easy for the audience.
(maybe greater accessibility)

>Thxxx and bravo Mr Flemming !
Merci

Cheers to Leo S, Karamanga, Sham, Bobby D. and Triton

Thanks a lot JM – you know I’m very insprired of many of your great mixes….. so actually I wanted to make a new beat mix for a long time…. This one was first intented to be in that style…but this mix kind of ”grew on me”…. And almost got ”out of controle” into this ”exploiration” in 80ies sounds …heheh

>this mix is cool as hell and i'm only 10 minutes in!
Thanks Bankie P
Btw love your stuff man !…. I must try to make those amazing flash? posts once…  cool

Don't listen to me smile
It's just a matter of different taste.
Do your thing, you're good at it!

Correct – well ok Cappella and Helyom Halib is not included

I wasn't sure but it reminded me of Helyom Halib (some "Arabic" vocals?)

You're correct of course.
In your case, being a hardcore Italo collector and with your trips to Italy, I understand you are even more careful when dividing true italo from it's German, North American and other cousins.
The rest of us, growing up with the ZYX compilations and similar a couple of years after 1983, understood later that Make Mareen and the other guys weren't italians although they were somehow connected to the italo movement.

Thanks Dica - @7:50 it's FAX YOURSELF - "Psyko Dream"

>I wasn't sure but it reminded me of Helyom Halib (some "Arabic" vocals?)
Thanks again Gustaf - I included an arabic new beat record  wink

>great work again Flemming!

The nice guys from SLABS OF THE TABERNACLE ask me regarding this mix over 6 month ago...
So I just made a bit now and them on this baby.... ok it almost grew out of controle  lol

Always on two turntables, one take, no edits, bla, bla...
