Re: Should I buy...

Yeah, Electribes are instant hands-on fun. I have five of them (2xES, ER, EA and EMX, oh and had an EM at some point) and wouldn't do a live set with no Electribes at all. They have lots of down sides but are very easy to edit and play around with.

Re: Should I buy...

Do you have an audio interface ytz?

I use a Shure SM48 which is the poorer cousin of the SM58. If you decide to go the Condenser route then make sure you have a quiet recording environment otherwise it picks every house noise and interference. That is what I like about a Dynamic mic as I don't have studio I can use it in the kitchen and the fridge and other appliances don't come out.

Edit:for my radio show, most of the time,  I actually use the webcam mic on my laptop cos I am lazy.

dunno about this mic but my experience is to keep away from Samson.. Better buy a good second-hand instead of cheap new imo..

Re: Should I buy...

I want to start doing hardware only wig outs with a microkorg, er-1 and a TG33 (and other gear in due time). Until now I have been using a computer to make music so I know nothing about the "outside world".

I am looking for a (preferably 2nd hand) 8-channel compact mixer (I know Ruud will say get a 24 channel D&R and you won't regret it  lol ) for experimenting at home and maybe a little gigging. I don't care about sends or any other fancy stuff. All I want is an honest little mixer that can mix 5-6 instruments total without fuss.

If I go 2nd hand, do I need to be able to inspect the unit or if I buy 'blind' from evil bay what should I look out for and what brands do you recommend. I am based in the US.

Re: Should I buy...

ytz - the AudioTechnica AT-2020 is a nice sounding cheap condenser.  It's usually around $100-$120 here in Canada, which I think is around 60ish GBP.  There is a USB version as well, but it's more expensive.

Re: Should I buy...

@Marco Tulio Thrash
send is a basic feature you'll need it sooner then you think
you do won't to use effects at some point right?

Re: Should I buy...

found Yamaha QY70 for ±90 euro
do you think it can replace the RM1X?
is it easy to mute on and off tracks, how about tweaking sounds on real time?

Re: Should I buy...

hum not sure about the replacing the rm1x but 90 euro is a good price and its a verry funny l9ttle machine i would like one again

Do synthesizers dream of electronic drums?

Re: Should I buy...

i meant replacing it in my live set up, since it's small. i really like the RM1X.
btw, is the QY70 got some kind of external memory?
and what about QY 100? they both seems quite the same what the difference?

Re: Should I buy...

I think the price is not that bad, if it is really good condition (these Nagra's are supposedly more difficult to maintain than your regular reel recorder). I know little about Nagra's, most aren't meant to be used for recording music, but for speech and instrumentation data in laboratories, stuff like that. I might have the model letters mixed up but I believe this one is especially odd cause it doesn't use have standard inputs and regular pre-eq's and limiters or something. I am however quite sure that (together with the big Nagra T-Audio) the only small Nagra  suitable for music recording was the IV-S , which was for instance used a lot to record classical music. I think you should search more on the net to find out whether this specific one is of any use to you. Didn't Roginator have one or two of the Nagra T's for sale? Maybe he can tell you more.

Re: Should I buy...

This one got mic preamps for data recording indeed and no li tiers built in.
But I think if you don't use the preamps or not to loud it should work for audio to.

It's also designed to record ultra low frequency's.
For stuff like elephant talk recordings etc.
Pretty interesting.

Re: Should I buy...

Maybe... I really don't know if it could work out. For the most part, those limiters and record-and playback eq's are used to avoid the typical tape noise and compensate for the loss of frequency's. And I'm quite sure that these recorders will use a specific bias for specific tapes too, most likely for archive tapes that are really nasty for the recorder heads.  As far as my understanding goes (I don't know a lot about it, I must stress that out), in theory music recordings made without pre-and post equalization should sound more noisy and less musical...
I reckon you could get everything aligned for music and maybe even switch boards if needed, but I wonder if 900 euro isn't a too tough price to find out it won't work as you hoped it would. You could give it a shot if you think you can re-sell it if you need to. Personally, and it's only my opinion, I think it is absolutely beautiful to look at but I'd leave it be and find something that I'm sure will work out. Heck, you moved house, you don't need a small recorder anyway wink

wink Elephants? Never mind what I said, go get it! wink

For a small mixer on the cheap, I would go for a mackie or a yamaha.  you shouldn't have to pay more than 200 second-hand for what you are looking for.  If any of your friends have what they consider a good sounding mixing board, you should plug your microkorg, dial up a 'fat' moogy patch into it and listen to the headphone output of your synth, and then what it sounds like thru the headphone output of the mixer, and mess a bit with the eq etc.  that would hopefully set the bar for what you are looking for sound-wise, and if you test a mixer you are about to buy in the same way, you can find out whether its going to kill your sound and send you out looking for another mixer or not.  I was given a 12 channel behringer mixer when I bought an rm1x from a guy, and it is the shittiest sounding mixer i've ever heard that was produced after 1990.  the only reason I still have it is to be able to make no-input mixer feedback loop noises.  I just feel lucky that I didn't have to lose any cash to be skeptical of the sound quality of any thing that comes from 'behringer city' in china.

yeah boyeee
