Topic: Buying an analog desk, need help!

I am in great need of a mixing console, I have been searching and asking around for some time now in the local ads and forums. So far, I have found three used models that I think would suit my need (regarding specs and overall opinions of other people), but I lack experience using boards and I think I could find fellow robots' advice very useful right now. What are the pro's and con's and which one will suit the needs of a project studio consisting of hardware instruments and effects, but no computer.

I found:

Soundcraft 1624, 24ch 16 groups, good cosmetic condition, factory P&G faders, built in patchbay, seller had replaced sometime in the past all the capacitors and op-amps to a better spec'd ones. Haven't been turned on for about three years, EDAC cables are not coming with it but seller is giving the connectors and necessary schemes. Asking price: 1700 eur.

D&R 8000 Series, 24ch, built in patchbay, meterbridge, has some crackly pots, comes with all the EDACs necessary, seller when asked about the mixer tells the stories how famous (ie. crap) Yugoslavian musicians worked on it and how he earned a house by working at this desk. Asking price: 1500 eur.

Allen&Heath GS3000, 32ch, meterbridge, good condition, still in use in the studio, comes with plywood desk for it. Seller is asking about 2000 eur for it.

Maybe I could get some of these sellers to lower the prices a bit, but so far the conclusion that I came up with during my two year research is that analog desks are pretty rare here, and when they come up for sales, the price is usually trough the roof.

Re: Buying an analog desk, need help!

Prices are imo to high.
I would pay 2/3 of the asking prices honestly.
And i'd go for the soundcraft.

Re: Buying an analog desk, need help!

Yes, I'd go for that Soundcraft too. The build-in patchbay comes in very handy, and with 16 groups you're very flexible. And the price.. Well, 2/3 of that price is a little bit optimistic imo, but if you could get it for 1500 you'll have a nice console for a reasonable price.

Good luck!

Re: Buying an analog desk, need help!

1200 - 1500 should be possible.
2/3 was a bot to optimistic maybe but 1700 is really to much.
People don't sell their desk that easy anymore.

Yes, you're totally right. It's really a pain in the ass finding a multiple channel desk, in good condition. Helemaal in Nederland..!

Re: Buying an analog desk, need help!

Get a Toft ATB32 (if you got the money ofc, not cheap this one, but designed by former Trident engineers)

But thats me, i am allergic to servicing gear...

Re: Buying an analog desk, need help!

Thanks for the advices, guys. The only thing I dislike about the Soundcraft is that I would need to do a lot of servicing when I get it, and what I do not have is a good technician anywhere around. That's why the A&H seems most attractive, since it's the newest one and in best condition of the three and 32ch too. The D&R one is also very appealing, since I've heard a lot of good things about its sound, but the seller is very scarce on details about the condition and overall state.
Of course that I would love to get the hands on Toft ATB, Septic, but those are over 5000 eur new, and I just don't have that much money lying around.

Re: Buying an analog desk, need help!

Ooow the Soundcraft needs lot of service then it's worth less as 1200 imo.

That's really only recent, it used to be rather easy till like maybe 3 years ago. Altho... good condition... Thing is, we want old stuff, in good condition and at a reasonable price and somehow that doesn't erm... mix well big_smile Most of those mixer get sold because they need work. Still the prices should be accordingly. 1500 for a D&R8000 in prestine condition is fine, but if it needs work? Those things are from 82... Same goes for the Soundcraft... That's even older, I think late 70s.

Re: Buying an analog desk, need help!

Don't know, for the Soundcraft, it's still a lot of money for something that isn't completely working. I know it's a 20 years old, but also look at the working parts, they're also 20 years of age and how long would they last.. And also keep in mind the service costs, if you could find someone who could service it in a decent way..

Re: Buying an analog desk, need help!

every old console you get will need some service!!!

but they are great sounding and cheap...
on the other hand new one that is trouble free will be a lot more $$$$
I love soundcraft 1600 and 2400 serie.. and thing is they are so simple to maintain and fix and keep in good condition
I would not give over 1300 for that SC if its in best condition...

also check GHOST and Studiomaster P7 /// they go cheap and sound very good ....

Re: Buying an analog desk, need help!

There is a Soundcraft 1624 in my city too and I am really thinking about it. Seems a little less pimped up than yours though.

Just wondering where the hell I would put it though.

This guy is taking offers on a smaller 800b as well. What should I offer?

http://edmonton.kijiji.ca/c-buy-and-sel … Z252127023

But I don't like the fact he doesn't have a power cable. How hard are those to get?

And there's a guy at a used instrument store with a Delta SR 32 for $800. But I am just reticent as it looks kind of junky.

Re: Buying an analog desk, need help!

nice 24ch into 16 groups !!! get that if you can!

Re: Buying an analog desk, need help!

Yeah, I don't know how I can walk away from that Soundcraft. It seems like an amazing deal. The guy emailed me back tonight and seemed like a really good guy too and told me to make an offer so maybe I can get it for even less. Big old boards are just hard to get rid of, I guess. It's been up here for a month and a half.

Only thing is I would for sure have to sell my Prophet T8 and adjust some layout to make room. Which is fine. I could just use the T8 money to buy more modular or whatever.

I think I will have to do it.

Re: Buying an analog desk, need help!

go for the d&r. the guy earned a house working on it! what else do you want? big_smile

they will all need work, but they will all reward you with good sound. mixers are easy to work on though, and if you take some crackly pots for granted, they usually dont cause too many problems. i know d&r provide all schematics on their site, so anyone that can read those will be able to service it. dont know about the other brands. built in patchbays are a definite plus, so is a meter bridge. best thing about the soundcraft: penny & giles faders, those things are silky smooth in your hands and are probably worth several hundred euro alone.

if you know the limiytations of older desks, all 3 look [pretty solid. as for prices, were talking about serbia here, so its a different market from north america or europe.. roginator is probably the only one who can say anything sensible about that..

Re: Buying an analog desk, need help!

Re: Buying an analog desk, need help!

What I do not like about D&R is that, if I got that correctly, I will need to use the channel modules as groups (floating groups thing). If it was the version with 32ch I would probably get it. The Soundcraft is very appealing but the price is too high, maybe if I could get the seller to refurbish it first and make all the cables, and keep the same price, but still...
There's a very good chance that the price of A&H could be lowered to 1500eur, I think that is a good deal. A&H desk has more channels and many useful options like MMC and mute groups, what I don't like about it is that it looks like a live board and the master faders are 60mm instead of 100mm. Oh, sweet torture... smile

@Rogina: You've got mail.

Re: Buying an analog desk, need help!

the floating subgroup system is the best invention since sliced bread. you can send the combined outputs of any channel to any other channel. if you dont need subgroups, you dont use it and you have all channels available. if you do, you use whatever you want, and dont have 4 or 8 channels that are never used because you only use 2 or 4 subgroups. its so brilliant in its simplicity.
i never use subs for my mixes, but i do for my radio shows. signal goed to 2 channels of the mixer, whicxh sends it to 6 subgroups connected to the soundcard to send it to the ifmx and to record it on the computer from another input.

Re: Buying an analog desk, need help!

anyone heard of ARIES Desk before??
someone is selling that one:
24-ins
8 subs
4 aux
patch x 18 + stand

Re: Buying an analog desk, need help!

I believe rspats on the forum has (or had?) one, if he doesn't reply in this topic maybe you should send him a PM.

My first mixer was from Aries. It was a lot smaller than this one, and from the looks of it a lot older too, so I reckon they won't compare. However for what it's worth, it sounded rather good and it was well build. But it's always a bit of a gamble, like all mixers of age it will likely have some issues that you might or might not be able to live with. Or even deal with, as it is a rather unknown brand so servicing it might get tricky. So I guess it depends on the state, the price and lost but not least how you like the sound...

Re: Buying an analog desk, need help!

Thanks Brian.. apparently been serviced and never moved..

Re: Buying an analog desk, need help!

Activating this old thread since nothing has pretty much changed regarding my situation,
D&R is gone and A&H guy made a dick out of himself by not answering his phone after we arranged our meeting and me traveling 250km just to meet him.

So I guess the Soundcraft is now still active (I hope), and now I have an offer for a Studiomaster Series II 32ch with multicores and patchbay and custom meterbridge, but has not been plugged in for a few years and probably needs service.
How much is it worth and is it worth the hassle at all? The seller asks 1000 eur for the desk, 1200 eur for desk + multicores and patchbay, and 1500 eur if his technician gives it a refurbishment.
