Topic: The Ugly Sound Topic

Hello,

any ugly sounds that you just can't stand?

I hate that "fake harmonica" sound from the 80s, but I don't know from which rompler/sampler it might be coming from. You know, that ultra-plastic uber-80s harmonica sound, I think it's famously used in "What's Love Got To Do With It" and some song from Elton John (maybe Nikita, well I don't know right now). There's a song right now on IFM2, CHAKA KHAN - "I Feel For You (Remix)", and it also has this sound in it.

Whenever I hear that sound, I start getting a self-rotating stomach  hmm
I think I only once heard a cool freestylish track that used this sound to a not-annoying degree.

What instrument is that sound from?
And what do you think are ugly sounds?

Re: The Ugly Sound Topic

I'm pretty sure the harmonica you're referring to came from a DX-7, and I HATE that sound as well.

Re: The Ugly Sound Topic

I also think the digital "noise" waveforms in the ESQ-1 are quite nasty.  They remind me of circuit-bent toys (which I'm also not a fan of).

Re: The Ugly Sound Topic

always had a bad feeling for dog barks, samba whistle and general midi FX in general

Re: The Ugly Sound Topic

I hate that dubstep bass with quantized filter sweeps that double up.

Yeah, it's a real mess now. Even rock bands use it nowadays...

Dog barks don't bug me, but it doesn't come up all that often.  Cat Stevens, Was Dog Donut is super cool though.  Samba whistles, could take 'em or leave 'em.

Can't fucking stand general midi horns of any kind.  Unacceptable.

For the most part I don't like the saxophone - fake or real.  Kenny G ruined it for me I guess.

Re: The Ugly Sound Topic

The Roland sounds of the MC303 and JV series.  The JV has some good sounds in but the analogue emulations are usually grating to my ears, and they're usually plastered with cheesey phasers or something.

The Evolver.  Features-wise it's a beast but I didn't like the sound.  Glassy digital with some bland analogue strapped to it.  Overly stereo.  Nasty overdrive.  Twanging delays.  I got some good drones out of it but why does my EX8000 sound so much nicer?

Re: The Ugly Sound Topic

i would say a sound ( all alone ) cant sound ugly ...its all about context

Re: The Ugly Sound Topic

The Roland Alpha Juno Hoover sound.
