Topic: Karl Lihagen - The Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition EP
The Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition was an expedition conducted by Sir Ernest Shackleton between 1914 and 1917. Shackleton’s goal was to make the first land crossing of the Antarctic continent, however the expedition failed to accomplish this objective and the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition instead became known for the adversities it faced and the epic endurance of its crew.
Before reaching the expedition’s first goal, the Vahsel Bay, Shackleton’s ship, the Endurance, became beset in the ice of the Weddell Sea. Despite all efforts to free her the ship could not be moved and the crew had to endure the Antarctic winter of 1915 camping on the drifting ice. Eventually the ship gave way to the pressures of the ice and sank with some supplies and three lifeboats narrowly rescued.
After months of camping on the drifting ice the crew took the lifeboats only to reach the desolate Elephant Island. From there Shackleton and five others made a 1,500 km long open boat journey to reach South Georgia. The journey took 16 days. On The Island of South Georgia Shackleton organised a rescue party and managed to save the life of all those stranded at Elephant Island.
This is a sort summary of the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition but I hope it’ll serve as somewhat of a mainstay for these 6 tracks I’ve made during a period of 6 months.
