Topic: Anime thread

Because there was one on the CBS forum...

My spies tell me mattamation has an anime room and San likes Tesuka stuff wink So are you robots into anime?

I've been watching some 80's classic these days: Phoenix 2772, Galaxy Express 999, Adieu Galaxy Express.

I'm not that crazy about Galaxy Express, but I really understand why those movies were such a hit back then, they have those iconic/epic qualities (in a star wars kind of way), and they certainly deliver on the S-F elements: robtos, epic spaceship battles, many very cool female characters...

Other than that, Mind Games and Tekkon Kinkreet (both by Studio 4

Re: Anime thread

awesome! i'm glad you made this thread... i had been thinking the past couple days of making it myself. i'm not big on

anime and actually used to make fun of the fact that people watched these things (this was years and years ago). i

finally watched one (berserk) and found myself loving it. i still haven't seen very many probably just the most popular

ones: mononoke, spirited away, etc. i'm very interested in finding some more good ones i will definitely check out the

ones mentioned above. i've also got some on my hd that i need to watch: paprika, my neighbor totoro. i've heard

good things about both and is tekkon kinkreet the one with plaid doing the soundtrack?

Re: Anime thread

Hehe..yep I like Tezuka smile Especially Metropolis, it has an amazing soundtrack.

The original 1978 series of Captain Harlock is also cool, I love the way the female characters are drawn.

Some other favourites:

Cowboy Bebop (also with a great soundtrack)
Neon Genesis Evangelion

Music is a beautiful opiate, if you don't take it too seriously.

Re: Anime thread

I like the classic anime Botoms, Lupin.

Newer stuff I like FLCL, some of the Matrix anime, Stand Alone Complexx (of course!), Reign.

I would like to see the new Batman anime compilation, think its called Dark Knight, heard its great. Also want to see JoJo's Bizarre Adventure movies.

I am a huge Otomo fan, so NeoTokyo and Akira have some of my most loved drawing styles and designs.

Re: Anime thread

Will watch Paprika this weekend.

@statiq - I tried watching Space Battleship Yamato and I slowly lost interest in the campiness.  Do the series you mention have any interesting stories?  I'd really like to have a good series to watch.  I had a blast with Monster.

I recently saw Tekkon Kinkreet.  Nice movie... didn't feel anywhere near as magical as a Miyazaki movie, which is basically what I want.  I thought the treasure town was overdone a little bit.  Didn't really build up a simple feeling associated with the setting to me

Re: Anime thread

next to most of the titles mentioned above
i'm also a big  fan of 80's euro-japanese series - either co-produced with an european studio or strictly japanese
but based an old european children's book:
nils holgersson , wickie the vicking, alfred J kwak, Spoon obasan, Belle & Sebastian

Re: Anime thread

@cloud9:yep, plaid did the tekkon kinkreet soundtrack.

@mushaden:I didn't watch the Galaxy Express etc. series, just the movies based on them, so I don't really know. But I wouldn't say well written stories were the strong point of these classics. Have you already watched Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex or Paranoia Agent? Both series have really solid plots.

Paprika is definitely an interesting watch, though it isn't my favorite Satoshi Kon film (the story lost me at some point).

I love Millennium Actress (his second film) for some reason is far less famous than his other stuff, but it is very original: You relive the life of an actress though her films. Her life is mixed with the characters shes plays and the story jump from film to film (World War II, Conquest of Space, Medieval Japan). It's a subtle fiction/reality blur. Can't say enough good things about that one...

Those two are favourites of mine too, along with the Ghost in the Shell Standalone complexes.

I'm enjoying Macross Frontier at the moment, nice story about pioneering to the edge of the galaxy.

edit: reading the paprika reviews & synopses above, will order later!

Re: Anime thread

Paprika was interesting...I think I liked Perfect Blue better.

Re: Anime thread

Dragonball and the old Guyver series...you cant go wrong there. Seriously, i know many connect dragonball with kids stories, but dont do that cause it isnt. Its a great series that you wont regret you started on

Re: Anime thread

yeah i only watched dragon ball on occasion if a friend was watching it way back in the day and it always was entertaining to me so i'll think of taking a crack at it. about 6 months ago my friend had told me of the dragon ball movie (non-animated) that will supposedly be coming out sometime next year http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1098327/ . what do you guys think about this? can't have too high of hopes as these types of movies never turn out good imo. altho a lot of people liked such movies as the marvel series movies but they never did anything for me so...hopefully they'll change my mind, if i decide to watch.

Re: Anime thread

noir, i've seen that/own the box set, it is a great story, i've also seen madlax, though didn't like this one near as much as noir.
all time favorite anime would be: my neighbor totoro
others i rate high are:
speed grapher
basilisk
7 samurai
death note (currently watching this one, very good series, i'm upto episode 9)

fullmetal alchemist
ergo proxy
magical shopping arcade abenbashi

& gundam wing, don't like any of the other series with big robots though this was right up my alley. I watched it like 3 times.

and there's all the classics like:
Ninja Scroll, Cowboy Bebop, Vampire Hunter D, Hellsing (& now Hellsing Ultimate) Ghost In The Shell, Akira, wicked city,

i seen millennium actress in the store though wasn't sure what it would be like, will have to view it now i see it mentioned above.
I was recommended on the cbs forum by other robot's to check out:
neia under 7 - I have recently seen that and was a great watch, not much of a story, but still a good watch.
Cyber City Oedo 808 - 3 mini moves, kinda make into one long movie
black lagoon was released this year, series 1 (13episodes) and we're upto disc 2 on series 2.
Batman series is released next year here in australia so i read on the last email from madman
Also recently got 2 of the lupin movies, they are great.
Also got the 2 Golgo 13 movies. i recommend them if not seen. esp the first.

I am more familiar with what being released these days than what was around in the 80s.

Currently watching Mushi Shi, (series) great stories and kinda similar animation to studio ghibli at some

i didn't really watch anime for almost 10 years (got sick of wading through 10+ titles to find one kind of OK one), but watched and loved death note last year...

Re: Anime thread

I'm still into all those classics.

Recently loved the Texhnolyze serie & watching also Naruto which reminds me a little bit of Dragon Ball...Good sense of humour in it ;-)

Re: Anime thread

I refuse to watch dragon ball z, naurato, each to their own, they just aren't my style.
I seen the first 4 episodes of Texhnolyze, seemed like a good story, but slow at first, must complete the series.
Death note is coming along great. there's also 2 live action moves, + a new one on the way i read some where.

Gunslinger Girl series (little girls with guns heh) was also good, i have seen episodes 1-13
and read awhile ago there is more on the way. A second series. As the first didn't have much of an end.

There's also Afro Samurai that was released earlier this year, 1 disc, 5 episodes that make one movie.
Voice of Samuel L Jackson.  Not much of a story and the last fight scene was a bit disappointing.

Re: Anime thread

Mattamation: I was also completely turned of dragonball z initially and badmouthed it a lot. But it changes when you watch the whole series from the start - meaning from dragonball part 1 all the way up until it becomes 'Z', then you see it in more perspective. But there are unecessarily long and dragging episodes that is for sure, perfect it isnt. Naruto i couldnt get into

"Luc-Ass deserves every flack he gets. In fact, I think he's getting off pretty easy. What he REALLY Deserves is to go broke and be forced to move into a dumpster behind Pizza Hut."

Re: Anime thread

i saw it from when the main character (forget his name) had just beaten freezer, then trunks defeated freezer again and his father. Then there was the android 17 & 18, then the green android thingy, and that's where it lost me, was taking too long.
Will give it another go if i get the chance, it's such a big series. so much to watch.

Re: Anime thread

yeah those are exactly where it keeps dragging on and on. The first 150 dragonball episodes are great, so is the Z episodes up until halways into freezer/namek. IMO the best is the majin buu saga, partly because you follow many generations of the characters through and because a lot of the earlier humor returns. But i mostly recommend the Z episodes as manga.

Not to positive about a dragonball movie btw. Dont see the point or how it could be good

Re: Anime thread

Dragon Ball live action... what could possibly go wrong ? (apart from ALL OF IT)
http://img295.imageshack.us/img295/5347/553pxgokubulmadragonbaps5.jpg

@mattamation: speed grapher sounds interesting, going to check it out.

I thought Black Lagoon was very much like a weaker version of Cowboy Bebop. The settings & characters are very similar: an odd trio of mercenaries carrying missions. But instead of space, the lawless territory in Black Lagoon is the thailand underworld (complete with mafias from all the over the planet).

Both series are heavy on action - particulary Black Lagoon. If you liked Cowboy Bebop there's a good chance you're going to like Black Lagoon (I know I did), but in a more generic entertainment kind of way, without the brilliance and originality of Cowboy Bebop.

Was also disappointed by Afro Samurai, as you said the story is pretty weak and I didn't really get the Samuel L Jackson thing, although he's the main character he has like 5 lines for the whole series, must have took him two hours (coffee break included) to do it.

Re: Anime thread

yeah i tried to find some screenshots, but no luck.
I really enjoyed speed grapher, Up there as one of my fav's.
If any one likes samurai or ninja, smaurai 7 is the ultimate, Basilisk also a good watch, great animation and stories to go with it.
In Afro Samurai, doesn't samuel do the voices for both main characters? (Afro Samurai & Ninja Ninja) I though that was the case.
Black Lagoon looks good, seen the preview's for it, just need to get it. I like collecting the boxes, artwork etc, so have to wait till i got enough money to get it.
