Topic: Home vinyl cleaning

Righty,

Need a safe liquid solution combo for cleaning vinyl at home.  Most say use alcohol + water, but stay away from window cleaner and such products..

I've got Distilled Water and White Spirits, thinking of 3 parts to 1.  That do the job?

Re: Home vinyl cleaning

Bought two bottles of this on a recordfair once and the first bottle isn't empy yet (used it for many years)

Couldn't bother to make al kinds of potions myself and risking ruining my records. Works alright.

Meanwhile have invested in a Okki Nokki which is really different. More work and more expensive but once you heard the difference, there's no way back.

There are some many other (good/cheaper) ways. People will tell you...

@ Scarface
oh, yeah... i also have that am cleaner. works perfect if the vinyl isn't that dirty.

wow, that okki nokki is quite cheap compared to other waschingmachines. usually they are 1000 euro +, or?
sounds like you are very satisfied with it. how many records can you clean with one bottle? and how much time do you need for one record?

Ta

Record shop I was in on Saturday had the AM stuff but..make yer own for a fraction of the price.
Aware of the Okki Nokki, but again looking for cheaper DIY option smile

Further research shows Isopropyl, Distilled Water and detergent seems to be the magic formula
accompanied by a micro cloth.

@QueenOfBlood

That AM is alright if your records are not too dirty yes.

The new model Okki Nokki is quite cheap compared to other brands yes. You saw Rude's DIY-recordcleaner of an old recordplayer, some tubes and an old vacumecleaner? Now that's cheap! Smart too. smile
Other (more expensive) brands are almost fully automatic. For example with the Okki Knokki you have to put the liquid on the record yourself (not a lot of work) and also push the brush/vacuumtube against the vinyl with your hand (sometimes a bit tedious) for cleaning while other brands do this (more or less) automatic. Hence the difference in price I think.
I think (not sure) I cleaned about 500 records with 1 liter of fluid.

Made an enthousiastic attempt to clean my most dirty italo records and gave them clean innersleaves and plastic protectionsleeve but stopped half way.... Not so enthousiatic anynmore.... Maybe this autumn/winter again. Lot of evenings inside the house. wink

@Freek
That woodglue-solution is awesome, ain't it? Very creative!

Re: Home vinyl cleaning

someone has had the bright idea to market this woodglue solution:
http://recordrevirginizer.com/

I bought a bottle a while back, but too lazy (and time-poor) to try it yet. A bit of crackle doesnt bother me too much anyway.
One of my friends swears by it though.

I havent tried it myself but I guess its only worth the hassle for (expensive) records that need strong cleaning. I also have the anti-stat cleaner and it works fine but can also be a bit of hassle: fluid on labels and records that have to dry.. It only works if you do a whole a batch..
There are also a few good cleaning machines around but those arent cheap, I believe Ruud build one himself with an old vacuumcleaner..

Re: Home vinyl cleaning

I believe you need 5% of alcohol and a few drops of Dishwashing liquid on 1L distilled water..

Quote from Discomusic.com.

"Using normal tap water to rinse off the record is fine provided your water is not unusually "hard." If this is the case then you will want to finish up by using distilled water as a final rinse. Distilled water can be easily found in your supermarket or drugstore. The real trick is to properly rinse all this stuff off your vinyl records and get them dry without scratching them. Drying means using a microfiber type of cloth and blotting the record. Once this is done you can followup with a quick pass with a brush dipped in Isopropyl alcohol to get rid of any impurities that may still be on the record."

I have a bottle of 70% Isopropyl. Probably good to dilute?
