i guess with new beat it's just like with cosmic. it's very hypnotic, different styles are mixed together, sometimes stuff is pitched down...
tracks like breakdown by carol & snowy red or euroshima by snowy red work perfect in a set as a break... to come down again without losing intensity. same goes for weathermen - poison only the other way around... it's uplifting and more pop. and well those are all belgian artists that's probably also a reason why they get played in a new beat mix without being 100% new beat.

You're right Queen (and it was also mentioned in the Soulwax mix/video):

The New Beat thing started when the DJ's played different styles of music (New Wave, EBM and other stuff) slower than intended. When the crowd started liking that, the DJ's recorded new tracks similar in style to the pitched down music.
Then it all exploded and a new genre was born. Of course they continued to pick up old/new tracks from other genres and mutate them into New Beat by pitching them down or just included them into their sets as complement/contrast to the New Beat.
As said in the video, they also played typical Acid tracks but slower since the Belgians, who weren't on drugs (well, I'm not sure about that statement) could not dance to the fast Acid

Roses are red,
Violets are blue,
All of my base,
Are belong to you.

Just discovered this (great!) track through this mix but couldn't quite distinguish Kate B from Carol & Snowy Red but I'll take your word for it that it's the last one.

Re: A lession in New Beat

kind of expected this question after posted the above. not sure if need to explain but yeah, some shite posted above is much more commercial sounding and less tasteful then some tracks that I know as new beat (check the mix for reference).

also please consider that luckily for me some of that sound never came as far as where I live. while in your case I guess you could not have escaped it smile

here is another track I remember, am not sure if in the mix or not

Re: A lession in New Beat

I understand and it's indeed hard to consider New Beat as "quality" music when you live in Belgium. NB was a massive commercially exploited hype here like we never experienced a hype before. It's no coincidence that all vanished within 2 years. It was too much in a too short time. Some of these producers really became millionaires in these 2 years that it lasted. I also never really considered it as an influencial style for later electronic music, I think electro, disco, Italo and early acid house were much much more influencial for the later sound of electronic music. But well, I guess as a Belgian it's cool that it was a pure Belgian thing yes  smile

I file NB under the same category as the Millet Jackets.

Re: A lession in New Beat

I think it did have some effect on the later gabber scene in NL together with other genres you've mentioned. Also in the south of Holland new-beat was pretty popular..
