Re: Why does new music suck almost as hard as bias?I
the fact is tho - new and old are false categories. old will always seem better than new because there's more of it. only so much music comes out every monday
the important thing is the history, not just where it's been but where it is going. in this sense new electro and old electro are the same ... the trouble is deciding if something new that claims to belong actually does belong in the history.
but with hip-hop its different because that is a culture more than a genre, and what hip-hop culture used to mean has lost a lot of its outsider/radical chic.
rap mutations are, for better or worse, the pop music of the 21st century so far - the culture has changed accordingly. chuck d must seem like a fossil to the kids in their lil wayne tees. hip-hop's punkish/rebellious aspect has largely morphed into a jazzy, conscious afro-positivity. talib kweli and erykah badu are, for better or worse, this generation's chuck d and flavor flav.
i think this is just right now, tho. hip-hop culture has never been static; the underground will come back.
i remember having an argument with a friend in the 90s about whether autechre's chiastic slide album would ever sound "old".... it's 2010 and it does. even the most far out futuristic sound is eventually absorbed into the tradition and things move forward.
generally speaking, if you like an electronic music track, from any time, there will always be another electronic music track about to be released that you will also like. that is, unless you become truly disillusioned. i'm sure a lot of people on this forum will have checked through, for example, an older relative's record collection and you can see how at a certain moment they just lost interest in finding new stuff and just stuck with what they knew they liked. i'm sure we've all met dealers who spent most of their lives collecting certain types of records until one day they just gave up listening - the sound wasn't for them anymore.
new music is a bit of a myth; don't know if progress and/or the underground is.
