hahahaha drok
For sure
this one should be a sticky
whoever said there are only so many ways you can say the same thing over and over again
Well, hopefully this is the last time it has to be said
so which sounds worse, a bad mp3 or a bad wav?
you forgot a word: nearly
you don't hear noise on noise.
Bas ror: How long is a rope?
I made a pure recording + 3 levels of mp3 compression, 320, 192 and 115. Its like a mp3 card monte!
The 115 should be spottable atleast.
ps. No analyzing
i thought How Long was a chinese dude?
the test is hard through my laptop speakers..
Its pretty hard thru anything sound reproducing.
I love both. even an excellent mp3 will work on the dancefloor.
i can't tell the difference on the_test.wav
mp3 / digital, is now / the future.
but records are more fun to mix.
i can't tell the difference on the test wav either, but i think the source material isn't a good choice for that kind of test.. it'd probably be easier with some jazz or something
All depends on your playback system too.
I've become happy with listening to my collection at L.A.M.E. 320kbs.
I did some tests with 320 itunes encoder, and 320 L.A.M.E. encoder and what I noticed was you get a bit more of the 3-dimensionality of the recording. Reverb tails, space around the song etc.

This is an excellent point too. I didn't listen to the files, but you'd have to use a fantastic recording. Some classic high budget rock record like Bowie or Fleetwood Mac or something, or a really well recorded jazz album. Most new stuff is so slammed to hell in mastering.
I vouch for the Jazz recording to test on.
Eli: Do you get the 320 Lame file by using alt-preset-insane?
what's supposed to be the rationale behind using a jazz record?
Buy a prism or lavry converter and some ATC monitors and then we can talk
I would imagine that a jazz record (pressed on nice warm sounding vinyl) has a nice dynamic range and is unlikely to be be over-compressed, making it excellent reference material to prove that mp3's by their very nature are inferior
Of course vinyl is the best but it will always stay like this? Digital files keep getting better!
actually mp3 encoder has more trouble with overcompressed signals.

That is like saying that one day a washing machine will have a soul!! What utter rot! Enough of this piffle I say!
And why do you say that? With new codecs, new hardware and new software of course digital files will be better, if YOU don't THINK so, please say why
