i was china for about a month- and i must say, the south west is pretty amazing.

did you work there? or go on holiday?

they're pretty serious about the work part in china.

i was working there. and yes, there were certainly high points as well as low points, but everyday was always very extreme- that's what made it really memorable. the work part kinda sucked because the work ethic was pretty brutal. all the money we made was blown immediately the following weeks in bars/traveling/restaurants/izakayas/clubs/gadgets/music/etc...
many of the foreigners you hang out with will be life-long friends because you're all in the same boat. the students can be great as well, but teaching kids is torturous if it's more than one kids class a day- sucks the living daylights out of you.
certainly pays off to learn the language as rapidly as possible. certainly pays off in getting around and enjoying things. wink

when i went to china, it was on holiday.
Yangshuo was my favorite place.

Re: China

@ ytz

how old were your students? (they would be 13-16 if i go to that place...)
and did they give you any guidance when you got there?
was there a book and some kinda program to go by?
was it hard to find another school after finished with the first one?
damn, sorry, I have so many questions  hmm

Re: China

Congrats

I went to Hangzhou... there is a great park with a lake and a pagoda tower that is the main tourist attraction probably haha. still it's very beautiful

Re: China

sounds cool.
I traveled through China for a few months from East to West  a couple years back.  Somehow I managed to get by without knowing too much of the language.  I preferred things the more west I got, away from the densely populated east coast and into the tibetan plateaux and more islamic peoples near the  desert areas and on the way to kyrgyzstan.
Theres a book by Paul Theroux called riding the Iron rooster that although written in the 80s still seemed pretty similar to some of my experiences.
My asthma came back which i hadn't had for years, so def some pollution in the air
good luck

Re: China

I'd be executed and my family will get a bill for the bullets used big_smile

I'll do one for the school ahahah....

I start to really feel for these kids now...they basically have time for nothing....
They get up at 6.30 and go to bed at 22....studying and doing sports...
On the weekends - homework...
When I ask 'em what music they like, most of them say Michael Jackson  big_smile
That's like 800 kids I go through a week...
They are very sweet and polite though...and some of them really shy  smile
Nothing like kids in Europe or what I've experienced back home.

Re: China

name's Radek
do make sure to hang out in Shanhgai a bit. When I was in Suzhou, I only went into Shanghain once in the 3 months, and I kinda regret not going more often. Travelling those 50km is a 10 year time machine

that's cosmopolitan

small town kids i taught had never heard of (probably decadent) beatles... (when i worked in shanghai, everyone was listening to beyonce/jay-z etc)

you figured out what song you're gonna teach em for the singing contest?
