Re: What new booty have you acquired?

@ all AN1x guys:
Now I know the problem... the AN1x simply sends less events. Maybe the processor is not fast enough or whatever. I recorded two mod wheel sweeps to my MPC; one with the AN1x and one with my Alesis Micron. First I recorded a note for two bars, and after that I did the sweep. The AN1x's wheel sent about 32 events during the full sweep (0 to 127), so the difference between each value was about 3, which means my mod data goes 1, 4, 7, and so on...
When I did the same thing with the Micron, there was NO single value missing! It went up from 0 to 127 without a gap.

It's not like the AN1x can't send the in-between values. If I'm precise, I can send any value with the mod wheel. But my guess is that the processor simply is too slow to send each value (which would match what unicity said)...

I finally got my Vermona DRM. It sounds great, very different than anything else I own. Like Sneak said, kick drum is kind of weak though... I love how the toms sound when they interfere with each other's phases. I do have problems with it though, the claves instrument is not working, and I can't get the machine to trigger more than one instrument at the time over MIDI. It syncs quite nicely with the MIDI clock from the sequencer, so I'm guessing it has the newer OS ROM chip. Btw, those chips can be obtained from the Vermona site for 15eur:
http://www.vermona.de/htm/service.htm

Does it sync properly as a slave?

Re. claves - I suppose you should open it up and check all the connections, etc.

Re. triggering - I don't have any experience with that. Maybe that's just the way it works? Try staggering the midi notes by a few milliseconds or something.

Re. eproms - LOL I didn't even think of checking their website. Nice one smile

I double-checked this myself: I guess I'll have to backpedal on my previous statement! It isn't a smooth stream if you're moving the controller quickly. I recorded some mod and pitch wheel sweeps into my RS7000 and there's a 7-8ppq gap between each command at 120bpm. This is about 8-10ms between each event. Each midi event takes about 1-2ms to transmit and receive.

The reality of the situation is that if you're using the mod wheel, transmitting an arpeggio and playing with aftertouch, any more dense midi cc transmission may result in a delay/latency.

So there's always a compromise somewhere. I have a sneaking suspicion that the Micron's midi buffer sends out midi data with a latency when you're sending out a lot of info... so although you get smooth data, it's received a bit later.

Sorry that the AN1x is irritating you!

Yes it does sync properly as slave. I could understand that the MIDI implementation is that much rudimentary so that the machine can not receive more than one note-on message, but don't know if the new ROM would solve that or not. I should probably ask the Vermona guys about that.
I have this large connector for all the instrument outs and triggers but not the cables for it, maybe I should find a tech who could wire it for me, or try to do it myself. So no compressing the kick drum yet!

Re: What new booty have you acquired?

stopped by a garage sale and picked up an akai m-8 reel to reel machine for $5.. now i don't know what to do with this heavy thing though. it didn't come with tape and after reading a few things over the internet i'm not sure if it's worth to buy tape for it or not. it seems like quite a few people modify these things but i'm not really sure what for, i'm obviously not very familiar with this tape stuff.  roll

I wonder what tape it'll use tho... Cause of it's age probably some low bias tape, maybe PER368... I'd be more interested in the mods. Like using it as a tube amp.

Edit: Good old Tape-Op, always there when you need it:

Re: What new booty have you acquired?

Thanks guys! I think this weekend I will clean it up and try and find some tape for it and I guess if I don't like the sound then I can try the mods, seems like a bit of a job! I've seen some of the youtube videos with the mod and looks quite amazing.

Re: What new booty have you acquired?

Tony, you got a wicked deal!

Let me point out that it's not a limiter, but rather a levelling amplifier (not to be confused with a limiting amplifier):

The term levelling amplifier was common in the '50s and '60s, and was clearly written on the front of the compressors of the time, such as the Teletronix LA2A

- http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/jun07/a … 607_5.htm.

Limiting Amplifiers are often confused with Limiters, or Limiter Amplfiers. Limiting Amplifiers strive to provide constant output power, while a Limiter refers to a diode circuit meant to protect components from high input power levels. MITEQ manufactures a full line of Diode Limiters.
