Topic: Tinnitus

so, any of you robots got this?
for the last year or so I would hear a humming noise from time to time when i woke up at night. I live in a 19 floor towerblock so figured it was the noise of the building, my neighbour's washing machine etc

this august i was in denmark staying in a very quiet village in the middle of jutland and the noise was there too. initially i thought i was going crazy but a quick talk with my mate google plus a visit to the doctors and it turns out i have mild tinnitus.

he reckons listening to IFM and CBS before that for 6 solid years is the culprit. i think it was the throbbing gristle gig me and meschi went to last summer.

in case the doctor is correct i have stopped listening to the streams at work with headphones and now only listen at home via laptop and speakers.

so, back to the first line, anyone dealing with this or got any tips or advice? the doctor said it can't be treated but i have found clinics in london that can help. so far mine is only mild, i really only hear it when i wake up and its not everynight

Re: Tinnitus

Got it XL in the form of a permanent ringing in my left (DJ headphones) ear. Only bothersome when I can't sleep. I do estimate that hearing on that side is only about 70% of what it once was.

Added problem (or blessing) is that I can't stand loud music anymore. I just need earplugs in Discos and such.

Re: Tinnitus

i have it too, probably also from using earbuds at an unhealthy volume. i don't want to give up listening to music at work right now though, so i'm just trying to limit the volume as much as i can without compromising the music too much  (i can't listen at the full volume in work anyway). i did however give up using my ipod completely as there was always just too much of a temptation to increase the volume when i was on the move. now i just read a book whenever i need to travel on the bus and just don't bother listening to anything if i need to walk a long distance, which isn't very often. i don't listen to music when i do my running either and i've got no desire to, prefer it without.

i only really notice it at night when i'm trying to sleep, and it's never too bothersome such that it's so bad that i can't sleep. but i wouldn't like to be deaf by the time i'm 40, which i think i would be if i continued the ipod abuse smile.

i was also told that there's basically nothing that can be done about it.

Re: Tinnitus

Ive had mine since I was 16. too young an age to be developing tinnitus.
It came on loud as fuck one night, I thought I was literally going mental/dying. I had absolutely no idea what it was.

Had to go to the emergency room at 3 in the morning with my brother. Doctor there said it was an ear infection, gave me medication, then went home... 3 months later, ringing is still there. At this point I started getting a wee bit depressed. It took another two doctors and another 5 or 6 doctor visits for someone to bring up the idea of tinnitus... then telling me theres nothing I can do to make it any better, just ways to stop it getting worse.

I spent from the ages of 11/12 to 16/17 playing in hardcore metal bands, going to some seriously loud gigs and listening to punk and metal at ridiculous volumes through earphones... this being the obvious culprit...

It took about a year for me to get used to it. I had some serious trouble with it at first and got fairly depressed for a little while, maybe I was too young to fully understand it.

Nowadays, I feel fairly good about it. Im now totally used to it and apart from a wee blip when I was getting a louder peircing sound in my right ear, it barely affects my life. I have just gotten used to the fact that its always going to be there.

Mines is fairly loud, I can even hear it on the tube if I tune in. I've put a volume limit on my mp3 player and I strictly stick to it. I also wear moulded earplugs when I go out to any club night now... otherwise it literally hurts my ears!! (was even wearing them at the throbbing gristle gig byron!

I suggest everyone, of any age to start protecting their ears now... Im still pretty young and mine are pretty done in! wear earplugs, stop listening to earphones and enjoy another 30/40/50/60 years of decent hearing!

edit: and shit Byron, im sorry to hear you're having this now. Let's get a pint in soon to drown our ringing sorrows wink

Re: Tinnitus

I've had some short-term problems in the past, but no tinnitus so far. I started with custom made earplugs from a general auditory centre a couple of years ago, but last summer I decided to go for a more specialised pair who deliver a high frequency response across the entire dynamic range (i.e. more suitable for music in clubs, concerts, ect..). You can choose between filters ER7/15/25. Prize was almost 200 euro (and I have only used them once or twice so far), but a good hearing is more or less invaluable..
I only use my headphones for dj'ing (but I always use the same ear for cueing which is not to be recommended of course hmm) or occasionaly, for checking some music or movies on my laptop; Ipod is for the car

Re: Tinnitus

i should be stone deaf after 30 years of seeing the loudest bands in the world, 25 years of playing gigs and wearing a walkman 16 hours a day in the 80's, but in fact my hearing is still pretty good and no tinnitus at all. i still dont wear earplugs to clubs either.. my ears ring a little after we play a gig and im close to a loud monitor, but its gone the next morning.. only compromise these days is that i either turn the monitor down or away from me..

And then be very carefull not to get a new one at different frequency.

Re: Tinnitus

I have it in both ears but I can't really say it bothers me all that much. I've grown used to it.

hoi!

Re: Tinnitus

i remember a big tinitus topic at cbs some time ago - i have it since 2006. was really careful since that (earplugs, avoiding loud happenings).
can live good with it now.
unfortunately it is at the moment a bit louder again since my silvester-gig.
i was DJing and there were really fucked up, ultra-loud monitors with bad frequencies - but the crowd was really big so i did not want to mix with earplugs because it is not that perfect. so the result is more tinitus. hope it wil be better again after a while.
btw i made the experience that the soft standard plugs with filters inside (30 euro) are nearly as good as the individual custom made plugs (180 - 250 euro) - and its not that bad if you losse them.

Mmmm, that is not really smart. I would have asked to put the volume down. But never would take out earplugs.

Re: Tinnitus

I've got tinnitus as a result of a cholesteatoma.. I thought I was going deaf for years, kept on going to the docs, but he always said I had a small ear canal that was getting blocked up with wax easily, so was never refered to specialists, he always suggested getting  my ears syringed, which I did..

Fast forward a couple of years and it was no better, now my ears were ringing loudly, bleeping, crunching noises, white noise  and rustling paper sounds, plus I was basically going deaf. Then I started getting thick black oily shit dripping out my ear. Would wake up in morning and my pillow would look like I'd wiped my arse on it! Very depressing. Anyway went to different doctor, who referred me to  a specialist, turns out I had a cholesteatoma, which is an inner ear disease.

It's basically an abnormal growth of skin (resulting from a chronic ear infection) that eats the bones in your ear that transmit sound, it can also eat through the bone between your ear and your brain, which can open you up to getting brain infections. Bad shit anyway. Had an operation to scrape the abnormal skin growth out from my inner ear, got most of it out, but some was wrapped around the main bone that coordinates your balance and sound, so the surgeon decided it was too risky. He had another go a year later and managed to get it all out..

My hearing is a lot better now, the tinnitus doesn't really bother me that much compared to what it was for about four years, just have to keep my ear totally dry (ear plugs in shower!) so it doesn't get infected again. The amount of time I had my ear syringed on doctor's orders probably contributed a lot to make the cholesteatoma worse!...

Take note of the symptoms robots, wouldn't wish a cholesteatoma on my worst enemy!

^^ wow, that must have been horrific! sad

at least you know what it is and it seems you're over the worst of it now though...

Re: Tinnitus

went to the hospital for an ear checkup today, because since i had a descent pneumonia just recently, i seem to have lost about 30-40% of my hearing in my left ear from one day into the next... never had tinnitus of any kind.

what i already knew was confirmed by the doc today. i have a small hole in my left eardum since my 13th year of age because of walking 'round on holiday with an ear infection for too long about 12 years ago, which took too long to heal properly. i lost some high tones in my left ear, but my hearing in my left ear in general has always been near perfect till two weeks ago. when i shut my mouth and squeeze  my nose shut and i exhale, normally your ears 'pop open', like when yawning. but in my left ear, i always felt and heard air coming through somewhere very clearly.

did a hearing test, and there was a significant loss of hearing in my left ear, lot's of high, a bit of low lost. doc couldn't explain how it's caused except for the open doors like ipod plugs, metallica concerts etc. he couldn't tell me what caused it to happen overnight. this makes that i do not think it's hearing damage because of too loud music. i'm always carefull with earplug/headphone volume, and almost never go clubbing. he didn't know if it could be related with the pneumonia. he did tell me that my left eardrum looked 'very thin'. he sucked some exsessive ear wax out, but that almost didn't help at all. still very 'muffled' and lack of high/clear tones. likes you're wearing a sweatband over your ears.

so, I guess I'm going to see another specialist, because i'm not buying that this could be permanent hearing loss of some kind. I want to know very clearly what this is and what caused it.

Thats no good Zubeldia  yikes  Hope it will get better somehow.

Re: Tinnitus

yep, 2nd opinion and/or diagnose seems a good option..
all the best!

Re: Tinnitus

ok I'm freaking out on this.. Always had less high tones in my right ear, but 2 weeks ago I was playing records at home together with some beers, and had some kind of tinnitus tones in the right ear after that. Its like the sound you hear when a tv is turned on without sound. like a high frequency sound.

This I can live with, but I'm freaking out on comparing My right ear to My left. And today its really bad. Chilling out listening to some reggae and when comparing again theres almost no high anymore. Aargh  yikes

Have to work a crappy job nowadays and theres always some ass that thinks its funny to slam metal on metal which always shuts my right ear. I can take loosing my hair, but i cant stand loosing My sound this really pisses me of eventhough its mostly my own fault for abusing my ears for years..

Re: Tinnitus

do you have cold symptoms at the moment? i sometimes suffer from the same problem you have described but i have isolated it to times when my sinuses have some inflammation causing air flow to be obstructed in the eustachian tube.

Re: Tinnitus

just got it in my left ear about 2 years ago.
the thing that worries me is that it keeps getting worse.
its still fairly quiet at the moment, but recently i started hearing very tiny clicks that i hear for a short time before i sleep. not sure what it is.
the final blow that tiggered it to my left ear occurred when i forgot to bring my earplugs to the studio when my friend was blasting his drums to kingdom come.
living in one of the loudest cities in the world (nyc) doesn't help much- the trains are ridiculously loud- so i now where earplugs when i can. never go to clubs without it anymore- unless i'm playing live wink
being in loud-ass bands since i was 14 doesn't help it much either.

Re: Tinnitus

what i miss most is listening to cbs/ifm at work.
i used to look forward to mondays when i had 5 days of inspiring music ahead.
i just don't want to risk it anymore so now its only evening time with speakers on laptop

as for living in loud cities, at least the night time sound of london can drown out my tinnitus.
the irony of going somewhere peaceful, to get away from it all is lost on me
