Topic: Crumar Trilogy possible mods?

Just bought a Crumar Trilogy in decent shape. It's as close to an OB-x as I can afford, and does the part quite well! In my ignorance I am wondering if this big ass thing could ever be modded to respond to MIDI... The polysynth section, that is. Probably won't be possible as it might use these divide down thingies like my Delta etc...

Would appreciate all the wise suggestions I can get, and slag me off if I'm hoping for the impossible big_smile

Re: Crumar Trilogy possible mods?

The Crumar Trilogy using a matrix-scanning method of checking which key is pressed. If you or somebody you know is handy with a soldering iron, you can connect a bunch of digital switches to the key-matrix and have them controlled by a cheap and simple MIDIbox kit:

Re: Crumar Trilogy possible mods?

thanks! I have a contact or 2 I could ping for some help and I'm not that bad at soldering myself although having a look at the link you suggested I can see it's going to take quite a bit of research... but there's hope! big_smile

Re: Crumar Trilogy possible mods?

The most ghetto way to do it that requires almost no research but more soldering is required: instead of addressing the switching matrix you simply connect a digital switch to each key (like a simple cmos switch or something).

More info here: http://www.midibox.org/dokuwiki/doku.ph … nalog_gear

Then you need a MIDIbox Core PCB ( http://ucapps.de/mbhp_core.html ) and 2 Digital-Out boards ( http://ucapps.de/mbhp_dout.html ).

I suggest buying the MIDIbox boards or kits and pre-programmed PIC chip here:

Re: Crumar Trilogy possible mods?

thanks a million for the precious tips sneak. am gonna relay this info to my tech as it's far too advanced a project for me hmm

Re: Crumar Trilogy possible mods?

FYI: I midified a Jen SX1000 using this technique. Even though the synth is monophonic, the oscillator is digital and doesn't accept CV so instead I soldered a little digital relay to each key.

The MIDIbox then sent a gate via the Digital Out board to each of the relays and it worked great.

It doesn't take up much room in the synth and is pretty straightforward to put together.

And you can reprogram the MIDIbox channels over midi.

Re: Crumar Trilogy possible mods?

@ Sneak : would this work with some string synths ?, I believe some use a diode matrix in the keyboard.

Tony - yup, I don't see why not:

thanks Sneak!

Re: Crumar Trilogy possible mods?

do i see light at the end of the tunnel for my crumar ds2 there? same problem with the dco's..

Re: Crumar Trilogy possible mods?

i have sorted the jen sx 1000's dco this way: http://www.njohnson.co.uk/

as per the crumar trilogy, it turns out it needs a bit of a service before I think about mods...
a couple of knobs are bust and it needs (i think) a good look at the vca on all voices... some are louder than others, on all three sections.

rude, the ds2, NOT ON! I want one.   big_smile  big_smile

Yes, that's a brilliant solution. I chose the MIDIbox route because it was a 1/4 of the price.
