Re: What new booty have you acquired?

Haha awesome.  I salute you and your Revox army.

Re: What new booty have you acquired?

Hehe, I got lucky, 8 for 150$.  There's a PR 99 Mk3 that's in decent shape, 1 B77 doesn't work at all but they all have broken switches or VUs, they were stacked in a corner of a computer recycling business.

My tech will repair the better ones and use the rest for parts.

Re: What new booty have you acquired?

they all have broken switches. its the achilles heel of revoxes.. but htats a good price!

Re: What new booty have you acquired?

Yes I even broke one myself!
I think my tech is up to the project of rebuilding a few, this is going to be fun!
Most play well but yeah, some were piled face top face in a crate.

it's 3 B77mkII and 5 PR99 MKI,II and 3, 2 Is are mono.

I wasn't joking, if a robot needs parts, let me know!

Re: What new booty have you acquired?

Good score TC!

You know that service manuals can be found on the studer ftp, right? ftp://ftp.studer.ch/Public/Products/Revox/Revox_PR99/

Btw, I actually could use some parts, I'm still looking for rack ears for my 99mkiii and I could use straighter reel tables, so if you'll part with some let me know.

Re: What new booty have you acquired?

I think all the rack ears are the same, so I'll have some extras for sure, I'll see about the reel tables, there's quite a few crooked ones.

So Brian do you think the Mk3 sounds better than a B77 MKII HS? or a PR99 MKI or II ?

Re: What new booty have you acquired?

Oh and thanks for the link, I found it after some searching earlier tonight, it will come handy for sure!

Re: What new booty have you acquired?

Tony - nice find smile

I have 2 B77's back in Canada - one @ 7.5 & 15ips and the other is an old logger @ 1 7/8 ips 3 3/4 ips. Bringing them to Berlin is unfortunately not an option. I love how good they sound when the needle is in the red!

Re: What new booty have you acquired?

good score tony! i used a b77 for master recording on the new morphology ep zircon affair, and it really brought proper grit to the sound. been looking for one for quite some time, but no luck here.
there was a rumor that the city i live in has revoxes/studers stored somewhere that they had bought for educational purposes back in the day. mostly unused ones. made some phonecalls but no luck yet.

Re: What new booty have you acquired?

Allen & Heath Zed-10Fx for bedroom mixing. It's super cute, and nice sounding! Super excited to have it to replace my dead Firebox.  cool

I really can't compare cause I don't own a B77  and I never had the chance to do an A/B comparison. But technically there should be no audible differences between any of the makes. The only B77 I actually recorded on was Rude's old B77, which was modded with balanced connections so that kinda made it the same as a PR99. I'm under the impression mine sounds a bit brighter but it's hard to compare anyway, cause they all had a different life. The Revoxes are compared to other consumer recorders really well build and that's why I wanted one. I do think I liked my Tascam a bit better but I haven't done an A/B compare cause my 32-2  isn't working right now.

Btw, they're very rare on Revoxes (even on Studers) but if one of yours has butterfly heads in good condition, I'd suggest you'd go for them as they're much less prone to wear. Speaking of wear, the wear of the heads can be easily spotted on Revox heads, cause they should be rounded. A flat spot in the middle is wear. Generally it's considered that 1 to 3mm of wear is fine, 3-4mm is relapse time or time to start searching new ones, 4-5 is no good. My experience is that heads can be found easily, I recently bought an entire head stack with about 2mm wear for 50 euro. Brand new playback and recording heads will be (much) more expensive I'm afraid.

Ow, and another thing: if any of the PR99's has a green/blue-ish pinch roller, don't use that one cause they get too soft and slippery. The black ones are better.

Re: What new booty have you acquired?

@Sneak, yes I love overdriving the B77 I already have, it's a recent discovery even if I had it for awhile.
What part of Canada are you from, I know you have a french sounding name but I always wondered.

@crc, I think there's a lot surplus Revoxes stashed in places, other people have told similar stories, now you have to find them, they're much less in demand than other gear, I once found a pile of Tascam 22-2, I they're still somewhere at my old university lab.

@Brian, thanks for all the info, I guess the sound differences will be more related to wear and decalibration at this point too, just playing a tape on some of them to test revealed some big differences in tone and volume.

Yeah I think so too. Did you demagnetize the tape path yet?

Re: What new booty have you acquired?

Not yet, I checked and there's no butterfly heads, oh well.

Re: What new booty have you acquired?

Got a nice conditioned red Roland SH-101 with mod grip package and strap in the mail last night. Not sure how long I will be keeping it, the temptation to flip it will be high since I got a nice deal on it and I have a modularized 202, but am enjoying its sound more than I remember when I previously had a 101. Its sound is a nice foil to the warmer, more vintage sounding  SH-7.

Really like it's filter and envelopes. Kinda like it's filter better than the 202 I have. Have become a real envelope junkie lately now. Their properties are the first thing I check on synths now LOL.
