Re: New COCKpits & GearPics

unicity: you've got so much room in there its not even funny. i have 3 times as much crap in 1/2 the size place..;-)
a good analog mixer does your machines justice, though i guess mixing in the box can be better than through a crappy mixer. but serious: all you guys saying that have never heard your gear through a good mixer. and they can be had so cheap these days!

Re: New COCKpits & GearPics

i have one of those casiotones, had a lot of fun running it through one of these

and made this track http://soundcloud.com/loren11/casiotone-clip
it would prob be fun to use thru a monotron

yeah boyeee

Re: New COCKpits & GearPics

I second R66's advice, have noticed a profound difference in the sound of these synths straight thru a nice mixer vs. squashed in/out of a computer

yeah boyeee

Re: New COCKpits & GearPics

I've spent time hearing my gear through a Toft ATB24, and I would definitely take one of those if I could.  But I'm perfectly happy suffering with my hearing my gear recorded through a pair of API pres and then mixed in the box.  I'm just not up for the potential hassle of an older console (or the cost of having one shipped to my location since the only used stuff around here is Mackie/Behringer 95% of the time).

Re: New COCKpits & GearPics

Ugh!  After thinking about this stuff last night now I've got this little voice in my head (that sounds like Rude66) saying "You know...you could probably trade in your pres and interface and come home with an A&H Zed R16".

Thanks A LOT you guys.   tongue

Re: New COCKpits & GearPics

the real question for me unicity is whether that is Rude in a vocoder voice or IFM radio voice telling you this in your head?  smile

we don't have an amazing mixer (late 80's Ramsa) but the difference (and headroom) between that and the cheap mixers or going direct into the box like we used to do is remarkable.

worship the potentiometer.

Re: New COCKpits & GearPics

Hehe it's the silky smooth IFM radio voice Rude.

I think I'm going to see if I can take the Zed R16 for a test drive.  I'll report back here if that happens.

Get your monitors out of the corners, away from the wall a bit and at ear-level.

Corners act as natural bass-resonators. I figure since you put all that extra effort into high-frequency dispersion foam that you may as well have your bass cleaned up a bit.

Re: New COCKpits & GearPics

nice setup, but sneak is right. bad place for monitors!

im glad my silky radio voice cn get inside people's heads. ive been working on it for a long time..;-)

but seriously, what problems are you expecting with an old mixer? they are usually built like a tank. only thing you can possibly encounter in the real world is noisy pots and faders. but how many tomes do you touch those IN the mix while recording? granted, i do, but even then if you have a great big 'GRRROOOIIIKKK!!' in your track, its fairly easy to clean this up in software. if all else fails, press on vinyl and blame the pressing plant. ;-)

of course parts can go kaput, but that happens in all machinery. a friend of mine just bought a brand new RME audio interface, only to find something is wrong with its firewire output which put his whole studio under static electricity. he gets shocks from touching his monitors, computer, etc.

Re: New COCKpits & GearPics

you guys are right ofc, but I always have a really bad bass sweetspot coz my studio is 3,5 x 3,5 mtrs and even with my former setup (higer and way from the walls I had a 808BD boomspot in my toilet and not in my studio haha

I might set em up a bit higher and they are (maybe not good visible on pics) around 20-30cm from the corners

About the mixers;

I have a Roland M480 rackmixer, 48 inputs and via some great routing options 10 busses, and that one alone is filled with my drums only hehe. I sum my drums into 8 busses from that thing (BD, SD, HCL, TT, HH, CY, Perc1, Perc2) and that works like a charm. Get one if you can find em, great value for the money!

Re: New COCKpits & GearPics

Rude - Scratchy pots/faders aren't the end of the world, but still annoying.  Being a relatively new Dad my music time is rather limited and precious, so cleaning up a 'Grooooik' after the fact is something I'd just rather not deal with if I don't have to.  Trust me, a worthwhile older mixer is very rare around these parts, and having one shipped in would only be worth it if it was a great deal.  The most intriguing thing I've seen in the last little bit is a Fostex 812 for $200, but I'm not into the group outs being on RCAs.

That being said, are there any older mixers would you recommend keeping an eye out for?  I'd like 16 channels and 4 groups if possible.

Septic - I've always loved your space.  That room makes me feel so relaxed.

Mono-poly - Aw yeah.  Looks like that jar needs to be refilled though.  wink

Re: New COCKpits & GearPics

unicity - a Soundcraft 200B is a good-sounding workhorse that you can find used in Canada.

For example, I had a 24 Channel / 4 group 200B that I sold for a few hundred before moving to Berlin. They're also available in 16/4 configurations.

Re: New COCKpits & GearPics

Hmm I was curious about the Soundcraft 200 series.  Skimmed the manual for the 200b and it does look like a good fit.  Thanks for the tip sneakthief.

Re: New COCKpits & GearPics

Apparently Denis Lepage from Lime is now a transexual and back at music production :

Lime was made with an 808, Linndrum, Jupiter-8, Juno-60 and Svc vocoder, mostly

Re: New COCKpits & GearPics

Not holding my breath considering Denis' last productions in the last 15 years. Even Denyse was horrified tongue

Re: New COCKpits & GearPics

Yes I had a look at that after, it's basically bad copies of his hits, with lower production values.

I'm going to see Trans-X on the 29th, more for the freak show factor, it's the same with him, the new stuff is just copies of Living on video.
Here's an interview with the Trans-X guy, the interviewer is none other than Pierre Perpall aka Purple Flash

just add a fizmo and ms  Lepage's transition to transwave synthesis will be complete!

...and maybe a set of monitors to help her decide whether her new productions are ready for release  smile

yeah boyeee

Re: New COCKpits & GearPics

Yes he seems to be on a trans vibe.  I checked out his videos on youtube and it's scary. kind of like a 16 year old discovering her feminity, but with a 60 year old dude.
