Congratulations! Glad you bought it. The sequencer is not actually hard to program. It's just tedious.

Re: What new booty have you acquired?

What a week...
First my KIWI Upgrade Pimped JX-3P arrived from the Tech.

The fully expanded MPC 1000 incl. JJOS2XL just popped in:

And finally I'm waiting for the G2 expansion to arrive:

Iguess I have to give my wallet a break now !

Welcome to the Future...

Re: What new booty have you acquired?

so how is the kx3p upgrade?  and where did you find a g2 expansion?

Re: What new booty have you acquired?

Good news: I finally found a tech in Edmonton competent enough to completely fix up and restore my Octave Cat SRM (SSM2040 version). It sounds and looks majestic.

Bad news: The bill ended up being 1100 CAD. And he says he threw in 10 hours of free labor (at $65 pre hour). I paid only 500 so the total investment is still less than what it would be currently worth but still that's a lot of dough in one go. Was hoping he would do the filter switch mod for slope and type but that would have cost a few hundred more.

Pictures tonight, maybe some sound samples soon.

The Upgrade is absolutely great! It's like you have a new Synthesizer.
All the specs you'll find on the Kiwi Page
http://www.kiwitechnics.com/jx3pupgrade.htm
There are still some bugs but they are fixed quite fast and Updates are coming at least every two weeks.
You still need a good Tech who can handle a soldering iron because when removing the socket of the Processor you can easily damage the board.

As for the G2 expansion, Encore Electronics made a new run of expansion bords which are the same as the originals from Clavia. They are working 100%. Check the electro-music.com Forum for feedback! There's also a big G2 community there.
You can order them directly from there for 499 USD:
http://www.encoreelectronics.com/cont_dsp1.html

Tony is very helpful and the order is processed really fast. The problem is, they are almost sold out and Tony claimed that he'll not likely produce another run!

Good luck!!

Cheers

Re: What new booty have you acquired?

Had the boards for these projects since 2005 and 2008 - finally had the time and $ to finish them big_smile

NTI EQ3D - this one took more time to build because I needed to design and machine the front-panel & user-interface

SB4000 - latest version of the GSSL Compressor, with 5 different sidechain filters & switchable mono/stereo vca mode

Re: What new booty have you acquired?

Thanks Septic smile

I've used the Waves SSL-4000 plugin at various time and it sounds competent, but using the real thing has a more organic, non-linear feel. I really like the two thrust filters that were borrowed from the API series: they cut the bass going into the sidechain in a way that lets the compressor respond more naturally to bass-heavy material (it's also known as the GSSL SuperSC add-on board).

Edit:

just for fun, I compiled a list of all the commercial compressors based on the SSL-4000G buss compressor:

Re: What new booty have you acquired?

So much money to repair/restore, but it brought so much joy last night. Like my other vintage synths, it's a special thing to have something this old working perfectly. It was my first vintage synth and going over it again for the first time in almost two years was almost as exciting as touching a vagina for the first time again.

Completely random noise box with touch interface, and tilt switches, and you got to moisten your fingers to get any thing out of it. picks up the local radio too! very cool!

Re: What new booty have you acquired?

oooh... looks like I'm buying a lynx aurora 16 with ADAT card.

I've been looking for 16 i/o channels of ADAT interface for my fireface, so I can have a go at getting rid of my mixer and integrate my outboard with my DAW better, but never really liked the options available to me locally. this was well out of my planned budget, but hey - at least now I won't worry if the ADAT extension is good enough quality to match the fireface for multiple AD/DA passes.
cool

hey sneak -
I really like the look of the builds you've done. how are you liking the Night eq? mine's just in the standard blue case, but very glad to have it. what are the LEDs above the knobs on yours for?

I still can't believe that nice all in one expanded GSSL design came out right after I finished mine....

The Lynx is pretty cool and has a good reputation - but did you ever consider just getting a Behringer ADA8000? Read these threads and you might be surprised:

Re. EQ3D - It sounds great! I wanted to keep my front panel minimal and so the LED's simply represent the difference frequency bands and act as marker for the dial knobs.

Re. GSSL - at the very least, add the Turbo board http://www.expataudio.com/expatshop/ind … roductId=4

I doddled for 5-6 years on this project so at least you have one smile

Re: What new booty have you acquired?

Yeah, didn't want the ad8000... I heard about modding them,  but couldn't bring myself to buy one. I'd been waiting for an apogee ad16 to come along, but it just wasn't happening. This was about twice the price, but has 16 outs, too... :-)

My gssl has the ssc board. I bought both ssc and turbo boards originally, but just went for ssc in the end.

Actually, I'm actually liking the gssl mode (mono vca) more than the turbo/oxford mode (stereo vca) on my material. The end-result on my mixes is a louder centre-image.

"The single biggest demonstration of the difference in behaviour comes when you pan a tone from side to side on a mixing console. -In Oxford mode it compresses less in the center. IN GSSL mode it compresses more in the center."

However, that super-sidechain is indispensable!

Re: What new booty have you acquired?

Boss DR-55

3,872 (edited by plikestechno 2011-05-25 18:42:14)

Re: What new booty have you acquired?

Hahaha. I bought a DR-55 yesterday too. I paid $100. Hadn't bought anything local forever. I had one before but traded it for a Pearl SC40 in one of the greatest trades I've ever made. Considering we shipped to each other and the SC40 is the heaviest 2U rack unit I've lifted in my whole life.

For a clocking source and some more drum sounds how can you go wrong with a DR-55? But funny that some people are paying $300 for them now.

Had it triggering my ST-305 last night. Fun too add all its instruments to the mix.

Re: What new booty have you acquired?

I paid £100 which seems reasonable to me.  I also bought an old fostex X15 for £50 to play back all my old 4 track recordings from the 80's.  I started to listen to some old tapes when I got back from work but I'm babysitting tonight so can't get out in the studio.
