Topic: Weirdest bit of kit you've ever come across?

For me it would either be the Motorola Scalatron or the Hammond Solovox.

The first was apparently intended to be some kind of highly advanced electronic device for piano tuning, but for all appearances it was a little black & white TV that, instead of changing channels, would output a drone within a range of +/- 10 hertz of 440hz.  the screen would react with vertical/horizontal sync to the input sound, if I remember correctly, and really made me wonder why they couldn't just have made it an oscilloscope instead?  Wonderful little toy back in my drone days though.

Second was one of the first monosynths ever created, released by Hammond in 1947 as an accompaniment instrument for piano-players.  pure square wave with a little bakelite keyboard intended to be screwed in underneath a piano keyboard and a lever situated so the player could activate it with his knee, with a 3/4 inch thick cable connecting it to the synth unit which also housed the speaker in a weird rounded wood case (cherry?  no idea).  Used something like ten or twelve tubes which took ages to warm up in the one I had, which would only work on a few keys.  Never really used it for anything, wound up sort of donating it to main drag music in brooklyn a few years back (they wouldn't give me anything for it and i couldn't keep it after my move, so better to give it to a place where maybe somebody will take an interest in preserving it).  it's probably sitting in their storage area to this day.

What's the strangest music equipment you've ever played around with?

Oh, now that I look it up, I'd forgotten a lot.  the Scalatron was actually a microtonal organ instrument, but as far as i remember the TV thing was a tuning tool, and i guess the piano tuner entered into it because i originally bought it from a piano tuner from columbus, ohio iirc.  would have been about 2006 or 07.

crc, i'm not mad at you that you had to sell it, but why couldn't i have been the one to buy it?

i have had fantasies about keyboard boom boxes for years, but never found one.
