Svetlana Alexievich - War Has Not a Woman's Face

Re: What are you robots reading right now?

Wow, you seem to go through books like a mofo. I used to read a lot more, but last few years it's been a steady decline. Love Tjechov. And Solzhenitzyn! Have you read In The First Circle? It's my favourite of his, a bit lighter than Ivan Denisovich, but so much more intriguing.

588

Re: What are you robots reading right now?

i like to read but to plough though books as a mofo, i wish... but no. Long since i posted.
it goes up and down for me, in steady decline doesn't sound so good...  wink

no, haven't read The First Circle, but liked Solzhenitsyn / Denisovich so thanks for the tip!
(hard life under Stalin - one day in Denisovich life - about a convict in a gulag camp, for those who are interested,
and now Svetlana Alexievich - honorific tales.)

what should i read from Tjechov?

I've pretty much just read short stories, but they've all been pretty great

Re: What are you robots reading right now?

Re: What are you robots reading right now?

chekhov is of course one of the greatest playwrights but i recently read the plays of aristophanes and they were all pretty damn entertaining.  this guy was like the og haha.  i was reminded by an interview of spike lee yesterday where his latest movie is basically aristophanes's play lysistrata  .. good shit tongue

currently reading:

tryna get some of dat clarity...

Re: What are you robots reading right now?

Alice Munro, my mom recommended about her the other day... i wasn't convinced, is she good?

@cebteq i was looking for a Zen meditation book, couldn't find nothing around (only old translations)... i will look for this...

currently reading:

Re: What are you robots reading right now?

I haven't read Munro either. Any good? smile

Re: What are you robots reading right now?

@coae I'm currently catching on to the plays, I only read short stories by Chekhov but I found a real treasure in his plays. In The Cherry Orchard alongside his trademark melancholic realism is his treatment of time (there are some great books written on that topic).

@cebteq I loved Aristophanes' Frogs, although I had to get trough some ancient Greek tragedies first to really appreciate it. I'll check out Lysistrata and the Spike Lee movie, thanks.

Re: What are you robots reading right now?

@ Technicolor & Mule Driver (trust your mom smile) Alice Munro is among the best  I've ever read, although got the feeling that people either love her stuff or don't. when talking to customers some doesn't like her novels because (a: they are novels) they aren't a story with a start-middle-happyend, it can be just a feeling or a sentence that is the "thing", think its almost like looking in an old photo album. for me the greatness is often between the lines, she doesn't write the obvious and stops just perfect not to musch not to little just perfect. you have to fill in. she doesn't repeats herself, so you have to be a bit focused.

so many good, hard to pick one, but... the moons of jupiter
(finns i Nära hem, men vilken av samlingarna som är bäst kan jag inte säga,
Kärlek, vänskap, hat är lite mörkare om jag minns rätt)

@ mekonin okey, will def read the cherry orchard, thx again for the tip!
