Topic: Godspell<=>Godspill

Pulled a record with this sleeve out of the crates this weekend. The record contained gospellmusic (I could have guessed).

^^ The sleeve resembles very much the style in which Godspill makes his artwork. Now I'm thinking: is this link between Godspell<=>Godspill commenly known or not?

Re: Godspell<=>Godspill

Not taken personally. I'm not that familiar in what's original and what's not in design/art (ultimately very little is I guess).
In this case the names (godspell/godspill) AND artwork are strikingly simular. I think Godspill doesn't make a secret of this (he doesn't, now does he?) but until recently this was unknown to me and I wonder if it also was unknown to the people who are buying things with Godspell-artwork like Creme Org.-releases, t-shirts etc.

Re: Godspell<=>Godspill

it's a damn fine sleeve, did you listen or just bought it for the sleeve?
nice resemblance

Re: Godspell<=>Godspill

Nope, didn't buy it because I didn't like the music (or I was too "gierig" ;-). It also a contained a booklet with typewrited pages in it. I could have bought it just for the sleeve but I can see it also on the internet if I want (not the same maybe...).

Re: Godspell<=>Godspill

Also the sleeve of The Androids - Love Dance has some resembling with Godspell-artwork or vice versa, when I think of it now.

Re: Godspell<=>Godspill

Godspill is full of influences...it's could be take pages to make quotations of all of these: from art-deco to propaganda, from 50's hero's to Hell's angels stuff, from psychedelia to punk.....but he made something personal.....it's what some people call "art".

Yeah, I know wink

It's actually another example of where artists get "inspiration" from. A seperate topic (would be a nice one) could be made about how many older recordsleeves I bump into with artwork which are the "inspiration" for recordsleeves made in this era. Especially with todays technology it's easier to quote from art made earlier. So to answer my own question: quoting from other artists is commonly know and Godspill is a fine example of "someone who does this.
It seems like I discover more where artists get their inspiration from as I go along. It's almost like a game of memory. smile

"positive mutation!"

Re: Godspell<=>Godspill

haha! There we go.
Never saw this one. And my inspiration is not religion but my background as a painter. And a little bit of symbolisme used in religious paintings.
It is kind of funny because i am registrated as godspill in the telephone book i get sometimes a call of someone looking for a church in the Hague.

When i registreted Godspill as a business i had little time to find a fitting name. I was also listening to Godspeed ...You Black Emperor and wanted something that will sound a little bit the same but because i am much more fascinated by bad luck i went with Gods Pill and God Spill.
Gods pill as a higher divine form of creating things.
God Spill as:

Etymology: Middle English, from Old English spillan; akin to Old English spildan to destroy, Greek sphallein to cause to fall.
Date: before 12th century

transitive verb
1 aarchaic : kill , destroy
2: to cause or allow especially accidentally or unintentionally to fall, flow, or run out so as to be lost or wasted
3: to relieve
4: to throw off
5: to let out : divulge <spill a secret>

The Logo is actually also a coincidence. Me and a collegue had a show like 10 years ago at Ahoy, rotterdam entitled "Baard en Kale - Famous or suicide". And we used our heads as logos to print posters all over Rotterdam.
The logo stayed.

Hope this helps robots

Re: Godspell<=>Godspill

And by the way.
Godspell is another word for Gospel. That is not really my thing now.
