Re: What new booty have you acquired?

wow lots of awesome new gear! the 707's look great, not old and yellowish like ours. (must have been one smokey nyc studio it came from)

got the r-100 in but haven't been home to fire it up yet. looks pretty awesome though.

worship the potentiometer.

Re: What new booty have you acquired?

also got some new play thingies.. tr 505 + 626, doepfer ms-404, and a suzuki mini chord .. not too exciting i guess but still fun to fool around with, and also got it all for cheap .. the friend from who i got them needed some money so i kinda couldn't say no.. smile tho i wanted to get a 707 too initially (wich seems to be quite a trend here lately hehe)
also found an elka capri duo organ for free at a fleamarket lately.. but it needs a new powerchord, havn't done that yet. and it's so big, i don't have the space for it anyways.. so for now it's stored away. probably was stupid to get it anyways but i couldn't resist.. looked so big & old & for free...

edit: oh and the postman just rung and brought me a patchbay.. time to get on the soldering iron i guess

+1
i think he means the version with three midi ports. Older ones only had midi out and in .

My theory is if you don't have the programmer the midi mod isn't that important.
You can have it running on midi and still edit sounds from the front panel.
But with the programmer it became a little awkward pretty fast that you have the nice programmer
there , but you can't use it while running on midi. Felt a little bit incomplete or something.

With the midi mod you can also send a snapshot tru midi of the position of the programmer knobs,
so you can save the sound. Or use any midi controller as controller. And set it to midichaneel 1,2 or 3.

The guy that builds these midi mods told me he is working on a way to also save the sequencer parts.

..if i had known the 3p was perfectly useable without the programmer, i would have bought one many years ago..

Re: What new booty have you acquired?

ssd are still expensive... for the capacity you get, I mean

Re: What new booty have you acquired?

Boss DR-55 (witch is broken) The sequencer doesn't work. But i found some trigger points on the inside so i will turn it into a sound module.
And a KAWAI R100 is coming this way. smile

Re: What new booty have you acquired?

Well I got round to plugging in and turning on the ensoniq ts10.  It had come from a friend, no real history to it apart from gigged hard.  But it had been out in the car and quite cold. Not sure I gave it quite enough time to adapt to heat indoors.
I turned it on, there was a brief lighting up of the flourescent display and then all went dark.  now i only get a faint green light on the disk drive and when i switch off a brief red flash above one of the buttons.

have i destroyed it? anything i should examine?

ok.. then i also have the later version. not that i give a smack about midi on this thing. the built in sequencer is what makes this synth special i think. alongside a drum machine with trigger it's pure gold. i've plugged midi into mine a couple of times but quickly returned to it's own sequencer. it's much more inspiring to work with imho. midi is just so stiff and boring. it's time to get over this midi fad guys wink  MIDI KILLED MUSIC!!!

the previous owner of my jx3p said it was tweaked to increase the resonace. it can get pretty wet but i never really tested one with normal resonance...

the only thing i dislike about it is that the lfo is so damn slow. i wonder if you can tweak that aswell.

Re: What new booty have you acquired?

the lfo on my 3p isn't slow at all, but then again I don't have much to compare it too..

p.s what the hell is the "manual" button on the pg-200 for?  I think mine isn't doing what it's meant to...

Re: What new booty have you acquired?

it's for switching from the preset sound to the programmer settings after powering up or changing preset.

it isn't slow?? man you can berely make a decent vibrato effect with mine.

you haven't destroyed it totally: the power still comes on. but something may have fried inside or maybe the display is just broken. could also be a loose connector or solder joint, or a part like a capacitor that gave up the ghost as soon as it got power. powering up is the hardest thing for a machine.. thats when they break. its one of the reasons people leave their studio's on 24/7.

first thing to do is to open it up and look for obvious signs of trouble. loose connectors, burned spots on the boards, blown capacitors that spilled their insides... also look on the poutside for jammed buttons and things like that..

I've been wanting to do the mod that has the brilliance slider control the chorus rate instead.

Yeah, I opened her up and snooped around inside. Nothing immediately obvious.  I managed to find a service manual for the asr-10 online which is fairly similar in construction it seems.  It would appear that the main digital board or the display/keypad board are the most likely problems at the minute. It seems to be a bit random with what it does when i switch on. sometimes nothing at all, sometimes one red light and occasionally the whole screen. at one point every time i pressed a button it printed a character to screen.
Will go back and check all the cables in more detail. Then it'll be onto checking smaller items i guess.  My worry is if its a chip thats fried it'll be a hassle finding a new board.  pity as it seems like it'd be an interesting keyboard.

Re: What new booty have you acquired?

as much as i'm starting to sound like a machine sometimes, this sounds like some kind of contact problem. if something fails, it fails and doesnt work anymore: if something happens to work randomly, you can bet your ass it's either a contact problem with a wire or multicable, or a cold solder joint. wqhen you said the machine was gigged hard, that should also indicate something. then you moved it, i assume from your words from a cold to a warm environment, and switched it on.. that's enough for anything that was already so-so to definitely break. nothing you could do, it would have happened anyway.
if you know the likely culprits, try either reconnecting and cleaning the connectors of these parts. otherwise, switch it on, flex the boards a bit and see if anything happens.

ic's really do not fry much, and they almost can't just fail by themselves. theyre vulnerable when you put them in for static electricity, and they can't take a big voltage overload when the power rails are screwed and start pumping out voltages a lot higher than normal. for the rest, they're pretty near indestructable..
oh, and they don't like fire either.. big_smile
