Re: Contemporary Art Thread

tanks a lot, lixa-6.
they are paintings, acrylic on canvas.  pretty big...190 x 240 cm.
they were based on a camouflage system called Dazzle, developed during the first world war for, of all things, big ships and boats.  it was actually developed by the impressionist painters that joined the war forces

Uh

Re: Contemporary Art Thread

ha i knew it
some of those boats are amazing

Re: Contemporary Art Thread

Right, real good, even better being painted. Yep dazzle camo is great, its been a bit of an influence on me, ive used similiar shapes in my paintings. Well keep up the good work, good luck with exhibition.

Yes, quite a big fan... he does some great work. He had a big exhibition down here a year or so ago.

Re: Contemporary Art Thread

does art and music have a relationship anyway? if it does it more importat than the relationship between music and writing, or writing and art. To me its another language, and of course there will be crossovers in some aspects, but they are perhaps too disparate to be an exciting dichotomy. when i think of artisits who have tried to be musicians, or musicians who have tried to be artisits, they have mostly failed.
I think the crossing of the two, can make either side seem diluted of its intent.
then there is also sonic art/sound art, which is not so much to do with music, and often thhis work can irritate me. A lot of the times it seems youre being told to 'listen', and that it assumes you have never contemplated what you are hearing or listening to before.
@fizz, what makes you such a big fan?

Re: Contemporary Art Thread

@ Black shape Are you looking at art as some other defined area separate to

Re: Contemporary Art Thread

yes, art, and 'the arts' are different. when you write a book, you write a book, not a piece of art, when you write a song, it is a song, not a piece of art. Of course, you can make a piece of art that is a book, or that is a song, but there is a critical difference. it's about language really.
Marclay uses the language of music in the context of art. but he is not doing anything amazing.

Re: Contemporary Art Thread

well they are different things, though arguably pursuing the same thing - the transfer of an idea or a concept maybe? Im not sure. I will say this - I did not leave that exhibition thinking ho hum - it was thought provoking - striking. (In stark contrast to the majority of garbage I witnessed up in sydney for the Biennale last year)

well is this thread art then? we are transferring/exchanging/offering ideas and concepts.
its all about context.
i think you are right though, his stuff still beats a lot of the shit produced today.
but i also think there is stuff today that makes his work look old and boring, so its swings and roundabouts.

i like the work of this guy, i think his use of music context/language is much more interesting/fun/exciting/
