Topic: bicycles

Ive started riding my old beatin up bike to work now the weathers good. Its pretty battered, so as a wee mini project Im gonna do it up.
Has anyone converted a geared bike to a single speed? if so, how hard is it to do? Ive seen some tutorials online but I still cant get how hard it might be.

Re: bicycles

Get someone from NL to send you one over, save yourself the trouble! wink

"Fuel critical"...He didn't wanna say 'critical'..."Rog"

Re: bicycles

Just chop of the derailleur, make the chain the right lenght for the gear you want to ride and bob is yur uncle.

Re: bicycles

are you trying to go single speed or fixed wheel?

keep hackney crap

Re: bicycles

I have me own service mechanic. Single speed is a pain at first but you end with thighs like Usain Bolt. Result.

A paranoid is someone who knows a little of whats really going on.

Re: bicycles

off topic usain bolt joke...

Usain Bolt goes to the clubhouse in Augusta and asks
to become a member.

Secretary: I'm sorry, Sir, we can't accept you here but there's a
multi-racial club 10 minutes down the road.

U.B.: But I'm Usain Bolt!

Secretary: Ok. Five minutes down the road.

Re: bicycles

dont do it! MAN INVENTED GEARS FOR A REASON ..the llegs are best exercised and looked after at a certain revolution rate which can be maintained at all times with gears.. I know there's no hills in lond but its still better

Re: bicycles

make sure you paint the body one single color (no stickers!) and odd colored wheels ftw

Re: bicycles

only reason to go fixed gear is if you really are worried about your parts getting stolen or if you're scene heroin trash who likes to build tall bikes...the latter may be just a dallas thing though.

Re: bicycles

not as easy as you think, you are best off with horizontal dropouts, which i bet 100quid your old bike dont have.
the harder you pull on your cranks, the more you will pull the wheel towards you, look at the dropouts, your wheel will fall off after too many hard cranks. you can counter this with modified chain tensioners, which you will prolly need anyway to get your chain to stay at the correct tension when you tighten your rear wheel.
i wouldnt recommend messing with it unless you know exactly what you are doing, have all required parts and tools (tools is nothing special) have a lot of patience and possibly money for when things go wrong. for instance your rear gear sprocket is a certain width that if you remove, you will need to fill with spacers, or you whole rear triangle, seat and chain stays, of your frame will bend as you tighten it.
fixed gear is for the freaks only imo, i know lots think its cool, but you are way more likely to die on the roads unless you are expert on your bike, like an extension of you or something.
single speed is nice in a way, for exercise, less wires on your bike, less things to break, and it will feel smoother too, (well maybe) and quieter because your deraileur is not clattering about

maybe you can post pics of your bike in its currewnt state?

Re: bicycles

if your getting a whole new bike, i would keep my old pedals and maybe tyres too, so it feels more the same. maybe thats just me though

Hmmmm, wouldn't the frame of any bike suitable for making fixed-gear be more expensive than the parts of all but the most exotic pro bikes?

Re: bicycles

Here people just use older racer frames and paint those.

Re: bicycles

Doesnt the axis for the pedals need to be quite a bit higher than it is on normal racers? I thought you needed a track-bike frame?
