Re: good distortion?

wow! the buzz box is worth money??  heh.. I remember that was an artist endorsee pedal when it came out (buzz form the melvins) and died a sad and loney death in the music shops of the world.... they were being blown out for almost nothing - seems shops couldn't even give them away. I played one, and I could see why.

in terms of fuzz + glitchyness, the mxr blue box is a good choice. fuzz + a simple not great tracking octave down. simpler and less controls, but  way better sound than the buzz box had.

That said, I still prefer channel overdrive on synths to distortion & fuzz pedals.

Re: good distortion?

The noise scene goes crazy over the Buzz Box, I've seen them go for $200 - $300 on ebay.

Distortion on synths is a weird one, I never do it for that Antoni Maiovvi stuff, but this other band I play in I have a DX21 through a fender blender and it sounds incredible.

This thing here can go pretty wild if you use it properly:

I used it a lot when I was still attending a friend's studio... good old memories with that TC device big_smile

Re: good distortion?

yeah i guess a good secondary question is: what distortion do people like for synths? for drum machines? guitars? etc...
thanks for all the tips so far, btw!

Re: good distortion?

got me a boss bx-8 mixer, and it's great for it's distortion.
as far as i know, marko laine used this mixer alone for distortion on his mid 90's stuff on djax-up-beats (mosaic, shuffled, above the law, cold, kaktus.)

Re: good distortion?

Frostwave Alienator is versatile and fun, with a transistor overdrive on the input for analogue+digital distortion. It is pricey for what is basically a bitcrusher, not that I regret getting mine.

That Jomox M-Resonator box... can be really great on 808 toms and similar sounds. Hell to work out exactly what is going on in there, and it just plain doesnt work on some material.

Filterbanks are awesome for distortion - again, with a proper transistor input designed for overdrive and the AM is killer too.

Don't forget the old skool route... cheap speaker + stanley knife + microphone smile

Re: good distortion?

I often use a Behringer EX-220 but nothing can beat a pedal I owned back in the 90's, a Di Marzo Very Metal... pure distortion heaven. http://www.flickr.com/photos/terekhova/3012045425/

Re: good distortion?

This list is probably not exhaustive and is focussing on the 303 sound but I like what has been done here:

Companion FUZZ BOX FY-2.

I have a Shin-ei FuzzWah 8tr, cool fuzz for synths.. unfortunatly not very usable on drums..

Also use a: Ibanez UE400 (bit noisy) PUE400 (metal) Shark Distortion (nice hush function) and some other korg/boss/dod-distortions..

btw; Im always interested in Shin-Ei/Companion stuff if someone is selling!

TB or not TB

Re: good distortion?

on all my old bunkers i simply used the ''overdrive'' of my d&r 700 mixer.. gain open and mic level setting. my 1500 doesn't do that anymore, i guiess because there's also phantom power on that line. now it would just add a ton of hiss..

Re: good distortion?

I have several Distortion pedals, since I play guitar, and my most recent buy was a BOSS Blues Driver. It sounds amazing, not only for guitars, but also for acid lines wink

For live vocals, I sometimes used an Ibanez SM-7, it's rather harsh but depending on what you're after, it does a good job.
