Topic: bent vinyls

what do you do with bent vinyls?
can it be fixed?
i heard that tou can heat it a little then place it under some books (?)
have anyone tried it before?
does it effect the sound?

(i remember reading about it in the old forum, but couldn't find the topic now...)

Re: bent vinyls

central heating works the best, just let the record get a bit hot and after that put a bunch of records under and on top.

Re: bent vinyls

what does central heating means?

Re: bent vinyls

the iron things that are heated by water, or anything with a flat surface.

Re: bent vinyls

keep it in the sleeve and put it on a flat surface, that's your best option.
maybe the roof of a car or something like that.

Re: bent vinyls

Or stick a big pile of records/something heavy on top of the bent record for a few days.

Or, try the oven technique hmm

Re: bent vinyls

i tried the oven technique with coke once, the whole lot evaporated into a white cloud, so be careful

keep hackney crap

Re: bent vinyls

never needed to try it, but i have always heard that ideal is to use two panes of glass, and leave the record sandwiched in between them out in the sun for a while.

Can't remember if a while is 5min or 5 hours. I am sure google can answer.

I tried this a stack of times over summer with different variations on the heating and cooling down times..
even when it was close to 40 celcius outside, still no improvement. Urban myth imho

There's a recipe for the "oven method" over here: http://www.discogs.com/groups/topic/158063
I'm reluctant to try in case it polutes the oven with toxic chemicals.

Re: bent vinyls

seems like oven + sheets of glass is the standard choice of many seasoned collectors / dealers
having said this, i've to add it's more of an art than not a technique... if you know what i mean

Re: bent vinyls

it's not gonna be easy job...
i think i'll try the glass and the oven method...

Re: bent vinyls

Try uwarping shitty records that are worthless to you first. Maybe record shops may even give some away to you that were damaged in storage?

Would be a shame if your guinea pig is the one record you're trying to salvage and it goes wrong. hmm

Re: bent vinyls

Anyone know if there's a store with one of these in the US?  Don't really want to send a record to Australia just to have it flattened...
