Pot is hard to find since a couple of sumo wrestlers got caught a few years back, nothing in Japan is illegal as long as it can't be seen by the public eye (eg. the hentai comics and movies) but as soon as someone as highranking as a sumo wrestler gets caught things change, a few years back you could find pot quite easily but since the wrestler incident they really cracked down on it. But as said before, Tokio is very safe, when I was there I saw a homeless guy picking up a mobile phone of a bench, he immediatly dials a relative of the owner and tells him he's going to leave the phone in a nearby policestation

the pot isn't exactly a deal breaker for me . i'm curious as to why it's difficult to get, is it because of harsh punishment?
i'm definitely warming to the place the more i learn about it though. that story about the lost wallet is such a reassuring culture trait and the one negative remark you made isn't even one i have to worry about seeing as accommodation is provided with the job . i know this can have it's drawbacks in terms of independence and flexibility so i'll have to investigate that a bit further.
so, next step is to start learning the kanji and surrounding myself with nihongo. cheers for the commentary

Unfortunately I never lived in Tokio but my sis and several of my friends do and I don't hear them complaining Like you said yourself it's the chance of a lifetime and I would definetly go for it! Summing up Tokio in one sentence is hard but I would say it's the city that offers everything you would ever want or need and more except for pot Every possible subculture is represented in every way be it in music (record stores (read above), clubs), food (no other city in the world has more michelin star restaurants, all different kitchens can be found Japanese, Moroccan, Korean, Italian, French, Jamaican, Greek, Chinese to name but a few), clothes (from real expensive haute couture to cheap vintage second hand stores), entertainment (movie theaters, opera, drama, etc. both Western and Eastern culture can be seen). The city is really clean, there is no violence or crime (my sis lost her wallet once and it was returned 30 min later by the finder who brought it to her office people are so polite and treat everything with respect which makes you do the same... Tokio combines a Western metropolitan city with Japanese esthetics and accompanying philosophy so you feel at home no matter where you come from. Only one bad thing and that's the price you pay for an appartment, prices are high and living space is small but with so many good restaurants you won't be home a lot and who knows you might find a good deal. Let us know once you're there

^^ the botlords are laughing

back on topic...
i've just been offered a job in tokyo (not teaching) and i'm in two minds about it. the job itself is not the worry but more the acclimatization as it were to the city itself. i'd like to hear from any robots who have lived or are currently living in tokyo about their experiences. i realize that integration is a lengthy process and never fully achieved but this is a once off chance. any input welcome.

Your Visa should work at most places but i had problems at train stations with my card, i couldnt figure out where to insert the card and the interface was not in english, i used atm at a post office, a white sign with a red T with a bar on top if is the post office logo, they can be found at unexpected places, the one at shibuya is on the top floor of the Tokyu department store. Visa worked in all stores i was at, some restaurants wont accept it though so bring some cash with you.

Other things to see in Tokyo is the Miraikan, the best museum ive been to. If you are intrested in robotics go to Akihabara and find a store called Tsukumo, there are several so look for the one that says robot.

Hey David,

You should check with your bank which ATMs you can use, I could only go to the ATMs of Citibank (wasn't in a p.o. though). Once you know which bank/ATM takes your card you are fine, I stayed in Shibuya and I had two Citibanks in walking distance of my place so it was never a real problem. Also bring your Visa, this is accepted almost anywhere

hello,
I will visit Tokyo in a couple of weeks. I remember reading somewhere on the WWW that most ATMs won't accept foreign cards. Also I heard that the few ATMs where you can withdraw money using a foreign card are located at post offices. Are these two nuggets of information true or total nonsense?

Just planning ahead and want to be sure about where I can withdraw cash when needed.
free download

Someone told me about one in shinjuku which is right in the action which might be worth investigating.

Recommend Bar Jam in Ebisu, a super cool bar not up itself either. BEST BAR SOUNDSYSTEM EVER, total audio porn i had to take pictures of the speakers they were so good.

Records...expensive. Worth digging for japanese only releases i guess and japanese jazz stuff i guess. No shortage of YMO albums either.

Shimokitanazawa is great, highly recommend going there.
