Re: Freestyle recommendations

Solid - Loving You, the dub version on this one is great

http://www.discogs.com/release/83298

also, who does 'automatic lover,' the one with the lyrics that go 'push my buttons and watch me work, watch me work on you' - I thought it was on micmac but I'm not near my records and I can't find it on discogs...  that's a good one too

Re: Freestyle recommendations

+1 for connie's rock me
her whole album is pretty good, with two other standout gems on it. the sunnyview release is somewhat common so you should be able to find it through digging.

brenda k. starr is another one to mention, though her best song (possibly) was vicious beat as seen in the movie beat street , unfortunately i havent been able to find it released anywhere, and what i have found from her isnt as good as vicious beat.

Re: Freestyle recommendations

Latin Freestyle was very popular here in Rio back in the day. Two guys made huge success around here and toured many times: Stevie B and Tony Garcia.
Here's Tony Garcia, with Reinald-O on vocals, performing at a suburban "baile funk":

Spring Love, by Stevie B, was a massive hit here:

Oh. I Just remembered a great one! Linear. Do you remember Sending All My Love? Awesome track!

We had our own version of freestyle. It was called Charm.

So, back in the day we had the Funk and the Charm. Funk was rough, dirty. Gang fights were very common. And then the Charm was the opposite. People put on their best clothes, lots of Soul Glo on the hair and danced choreographed dance steps.

Re: Freestyle recommendations

no one mentioned johnny o - fantasy girl?

Re: Freestyle recommendations

Just heard this one in the 80's white-pimp exploitation film STREETWALKIN': John Rocca - I Want It To Be Real (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8r7xAus_Zno)...Freestyle meets Bronski Beat? I also love Shannon's "My Heart's Divided" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZZRQ7w2ouFI).

I still hear Pretty Poison, Rockell, and Lil Suzy on the radio a lot. In fact there was a special program here called "12 Noon Workout" that played an hour-long mix of freestyle occasionally interrupted with tips from a "fitness expert". smile

Re: Freestyle recommendations

i would recommend
911 - twenty four seven

very powerful production, unfortunately trashy recording,
but definitely worth a listen.

some friends hate it 'cause it's a bit cheesy,
but sometimes cheese is delicious smile

Somebody was trying to tell me that CDs are better than vinyl because they don't have any surface noise. I said, "Listen, mate, -life- has surface noise..." [John Peel]
