Re: What new booty have you acquired?

What do you think of the CS01? I had a CS01 mkII around for a few weeks and thought it was pretty boring. Especially considering what else I have around.

Nice filter and PWM (more like glissando) but when I had a chance to triple my money, it wasn't a tough decision.

Re: What new booty have you acquired?

Yeah. Nothing spectacular and quite boring.
I bought it for 80e only as a small lead (and noise-hits) synthesizer for gigs instead of my Yamaha CS5.

Re: What new booty have you acquired?

Its size is its most interesting feature, but the PWM is also pretty badass!

Re: What new booty have you acquired?

Yes CS-01 is a rather fun little synth.
In a similar vein, there is the new Monotron. Has not been released yet, so i have not yet acquired it.

A Thorens TD150 mk2. Had some old din type plug so i soldered a new cable on it...my technics just got humbled really bad. Playing Steely Dan's Aja on it right now, chills...

That's like playing Hotel california when trying a guitar or the Jump sound on a synth.
A benchmark cliché.

I don't care. I love that record to death and to me it's one of the best recordings ever made. How would you compare a musical instrument to a prerecorded medium anyhow?
edit:

i will also be playing:

Donny Hathaway's Extensions of a man
Beach Boys Pet Sounds
zappa Hot rats
Shuggie Otis inspiration information
Marvin Gaye's Troubleman soundtrack
And maybe even some Rubber soul

All audiophile 180 gram japanese pressings ofcourse, just to indulge in the wonderful world of benchmark clichés...

Re: What new booty have you acquired?

The analogy is with a  musical instrument vs a record player.  You can make use of a benchmark music composition or recording to reveal their characteristics.
I'm just teasing you and I have nothing against Aja, great drums by Bernard Purdie, but it's a stereo store staple since it came out, to the point where it's cliché.

if you like these you might wanna check Don 'Sugarcane' Harris, he plays on Hot Rats (and other Zappa albums) and played with Johnny and Shuggie Otis. Very cool stuff..

Re: What new booty have you acquired?

Yeah, I heard that those bucket-brigade chips are very hard to find nowadays. The reverb is very haunting and metallic and I love the modulation. Oh and mine seems to be the early version that can self-oscillate

FFFUUUUUU.... I don't even want to tell you how much I paid only for the VRS 23 just a while ago... Well, it's a good sounding delay anyways.

Re: What new booty have you acquired?

Cheetah MS6. Fun, surprisingly warm. Nice aftertouch and velocity. Nice deal at 250 USD.

Re: What new booty have you acquired?

plike: did you get the FW upgrade? .. http://www.maad.net/ms6/

the guy is very reasonable to deal with, i got 2 really cheap.

CRACKED BY MR. Z...

Re: What new booty have you acquired?

Not yet. Just got the unit itself in the mail.

His prices aren't too bad but if I get the FW and a new battery you think he might cut me a deal a bit, then?

Re: What new booty have you acquired?

Boss RE-20 Space Echo pedal.

Not really feeling this one.  I didn't expect it to sound like a real Space Echo, but I thought it would sound better than it does.  Distorts fairly easily, and not in a good way.  I found I was constantly adjusting the input level and echo volume to get rid of the distortion (I assume this is actually the modelled "tape saturation", but it just sounds like brittle digital distortion to me).

If I didn't have other analog delays around I'd probably feel differently about it.  I got a great deal on it so I had to check it out.

I'll give it another chance tonight but I'm pretty sure I'll be selling it off shortly.  hmm

Re: What new booty have you acquired?

@Unicity: Yep, ain't no 'real thing'..... sell sell !! hehe

Re: What new booty have you acquired?

I still have my RE-20 and I use it all the time, you have to deal with the levels but once it's set right It shouldn't distort.
I use it as my delay fx send "B", ("A" being the Fostex 3180) in Ableton Live.
It'smore stable compared to my RE-101, and has a "echo only" switch.

I kind of regret selling my Korg SE-500 because it was stable and perfect for fx send as it had a proper echo out.  But I prefer the RE sound, be it 101 or 20.

Re: What new booty have you acquired?

Well I hooked it up to my patchbay and tried it as a send effect in Live and the level/distortion issue is less of a headache for sure since I can just ease off the send amount in Live.  The reverb actually sounds really nice on synths too.  I'll give it a bit more time.

Re: What new booty have you acquired?

SammichSID should be on the way....
Honestly I never thought of getting a SID-based synth (although I love SID music from the C64 era), but a friend
convinced me smile
