You're very lucky to get an original working Linn Drum. Electronics usually don't last longer then 10 years. You should be thankfull for what you got.
Forget about the midi-kit. It was never designed to be used with midi. That will remove the edge of the sound. Just use a mixer.

I am lucky, but I seeked it out and paid for it, it wasn't a gift from god.  Electronics on the Linn drum will probably last over 50 years if taken care of.
Midi would be great for syncing the machine's sequencer to my computer, and adding fills and stuff, I don't worry about "the edge" so much.
What do you mean by "just use a mixer?"

yeah man, if anything is build for eternity its the linn drum. nice catch. i could never get mine to sync with midi, but apparently the guy i sold it to has no problem and this was just using a small sync box.
midi wont remove anything from the sound (??) only maybe the groove of the internal sequencer but you can always slave that to midi clock. that always works.. hell, i have a maestro rhythm king here from the late 60's with midi clock sync built in.. works like a charm.

Re: What new booty have you acquired?

The Linn went back to the repair guy, he had a pretty good idea of what was wrong, some chip he put it that wasn't fast enough, he's really slow but good so I'll try to stay patient.

I'll probably use the internal sequencer more, as it's really easy to use.  I remember reading about Roger Linn's impression on the unique groove of the Linn, he said that it's most likely a result of imprecise editing of the eprom sounds, like the snare being a little late.  I thought that was a funny down-to-earth answer.

We'll see when I get that original chip.

I know you have that maestro, you had mentionned it on CBS and it made me realize that those boxes can be synced, some of those old school rhythm boxes have great sounds!
I would of probably kept my Kr-55b if I had known it could be modded.

Re: What new booty have you acquired?

last night I pulled the trigger on a UA audio LA610.

It was maybe a bit of a silly buy, because I was planning on upgrading either audio interface or monitors, but I grabbed this instead.
:-)

I'm not really sure what to expect, but I loved the sound of one when I played with it in a shop years ago with a mic. though here I'll be more often wanting to use it as a DI for synths and drum machines. I figure if it doesn't do anything really useful for me, I can sell it on and get most of my money back.

so - I bought a fun experiment.

excited to get it now!

cool! yeah I got it ex demo (though 3 years in shop so maybe no warranty) for around what they seem to go for 2nd hand in the US.

Have you ever run synths or drum machines through it?
people seem to really like them for bass guitar, but not much discussion on them for anything else.
:-)
I figure that at least with synths there's lots of scope to control the levels going into it, so shouldn't have any problems with lack of headroom.

I have some possibility of recording a few vocalists in the near future, so sounds like it'll be awesome for that, at the very least...

I am awaiting a roland MKS-7

http://www.vintagesynth.com/roland/images/mks7.jpg

I dont know if i paid too much. I had to9 decide fast and did not get too many infos about it. there seems to be different opinios on it wetter it sounds like a Juno or not ( I wouldn't be able to compare).
its a preset machine, but with a Juno editor the sounds will be tweekable.

Re: What new booty have you acquired?

its a juno and a 707.... big_smile

I've been looking at one of those myself, totally forgot about it, will see if it's still for sale... Anway, I read that editing is not even that hard without an editor, from what I gather it works like editing a jx8p or korg dw8000 and the likes: enter a parameter number and then adjust the parameter value.

Re: What new booty have you acquired?

Nice one Meschi. Can't figure out what that bass is - looks like a luthier one-off job, but looks nothing like a Warwick though. More like a strange cross between a Travis Bean and a less outrageous Carl Thompson.

More photos and info please...

PS: I've suddenly reignited my interest in purchasing the Ashbory Bass someday. The D and G strings might snap easily, and it detunes like a cunt, but their sound is ace!

there seems to be an "engineer mode" where you can programm it from the front panel. since there is no RAM memory and the MKS will loose all its patches when switched off, I assume it would make sence to use an editor.
I will know more when the machine gets here.

and yes there is a 707 (without sequencer) in it too :-) Cant wait.

Arp Sequencer?

yeah a arp sequencer MK2...great tool with some nice features and lot of patch-options for using it with modular-stuff.

Orgel!

Re: What new booty have you acquired?

Nice sequencer but the prices are to crazy compared to stuff like an rs-200

i don't need the gear, the gear needs me

i've also seen some chinese knockoffs that look like this.. including the one-neckpiece construction. so its not necessarily a ''real brand'' instrument.. but hey, even my cheap one plays really well, so even if this is a chinese fantasy brand, it still can be a very good bass. big_smile

Re: What new booty have you acquired?

I'm at a loss as to what it is. Looking at what I can get out of the headstock now, it also has echoes of a 70's Ibanez, which lends a bit more to the 'Chinese Fantasy Brand' theory there Rude. Whatever it is, I hope that it plays well!

Re: What new booty have you acquired?

yeah you are right mono - there are much better sequencers out there...for less money...but you have always to pay if you want it the oldschoolish way...

people are having big modulars just for a bleep... instead of buying cheap novations or whatever...

...there are not really lot of arp sequencers out on the market - i got a real nice working and looking one (calibrated with new slidershafts)....it was not cheap but i am finally happy with it...
