it's true, 7" is really the new 12". Especially for italo stuff (crazy prices lately..)
next year: return of the cassingle?
Still a cheap alternative for 12inch-version mostly. Only when it's a 7-inch-only release prices can go skyhigh, indeed...
I don't mind 2011 being the year of the 7" as long as a lot of 7"s still can be bought dirt cheap, at least on flea markets, 2nd hand shops and so on (all the 7's above were 50 cent each). It's often a cheap way to discover great stuff.
I never disliked the 7", though I prefer 12"s. I often buy 7'es, even when I have the 12", I like to have both. Sometimes 7"s have a picture-sleeve in comparison to the 12", which is nice too. I don't think the 7" will be just as popular as 12"s, at least not in Italo/disco/electro etc. circles, though it would be kind of ridiculous when stuff would be disliked only because of a format. So in a way it's positive that this stuff is appecriated now, it's a negative side-effect (though logical) that prices go up. Sellers might diasagree
I used to buy a lot of (new) punk/hardcore/crust 7"s some time ago (and put out a few with some people), it's really a very nice punk-format, definitely for fast hardcore/punk bands that try to put as many songs on a 7" as possible. A full-lenght would be often a bit to much in that case.
Anyway, 7"s do have some disadvantages: songs being short edits, sound quality can be worse, but when I see a 7" that's interesting and cheap I'll buy it, definetely when it has appeared on 7" exclusively. When songs did appear on both 12" and 7" it's nice to have a 7" until you find the 12". Same can be said about 7"s of songs that didn't appear on a 12" but did appear on an album.
I don't think the cassette-single will be popular again, though I think that tapes in general are a bit more popular than it has been in the recent past. I know some people that buy and release tapes.
Arived in the mail yesterday (not a 7" )
Mekanik Kommando - It Would Be Quiet In The Woods If Only A Few Birds Sing lp (Torso)
Very nice!
Now hoping I can find some nice stuff on the Queensday vrijmarkt next.
