f*cckkk, you're totally speaking out my thoughts,
i'm also in that conflict and fighting with myself every day.
it's always that battle between wanna have and with "living free with some money and another life".
what keeps me from selling my collection is just the fact how much time i spent to buy and digg
all that stuff, at least half of my lifetime is gone for that
also, the records i'm digging for now are nearly all at least 100 Euri or more,
and i won't spend that much for records, also because i sometimes spent way too much in the past
on the other hand, i'm sure i'd be very depressed without the records but some money,
because the mind is always playing tricks with that 'have' and 'not have' thing
One thing is sure.
These italo sellers are buying the records cheap and are selling them to us collector freaks
for big money.
Italy must be full with these "rare" records , but for the most of us the records will be only available
after torelli an co. picked them up from whencever for peanuts.
That sucks !
Also the fact that nearly all sellers check first the records on Discogs isn

Then some collectors found an old stock of that record and some more ( everybody knows the pictures with 10 sealed copys of Amnesie ), and the prices went down immediately .
I've seen so many "mint" or "near mint" copies of the Alex Chroma Band 12" on eBay recently that I'm sure someone found an unplayed stash. Funny, it's always the eBay seller 000toro listing them, just check the current and recently completed listings....
jeez, i never knew that record collectors were such a bunch of whining little children..
dolcevita: who are you collecting for? yourself? or just to impress your friends?
and what is the problem with someone making money with vinyl? you guys think all these sellers do it as a charity for us collectors? come on.. and as Scarface said, its only his sales total. he may have payed 9950 euro for the records he sold for 10.000..
mr. Satellite: how do you know these guys buy them cheap? and even if they do, it's all a matter of supply and demand.. no one is putting a gun to your head to buy these records. there's also a bunch of new order stuff i'll probably never own (and they have become masters at milking the collectors market, italo is nothing, nothing compared to that) and i dont loose one night of sleep over it.
as for the Turas record: its not as rare as they want you to believe it is, its a rare as how many people are looking for it. i guess with this batch most people looking for it got a copy, so it dried up the demand for it. also these guys promised the person they bought it from, not to sell them for high collectors prices, so they actually did a lot of people who still wanted it a favour.
and all of you that only are looking for 100 euro records or more: have you considered looking into other genres? there's so much good stuff out there, i still hear at least 1 track per day that i could add to my wantlist on ifm.. and most of it is stuff thats easily available...
@rude
you are right , i can

my question was more in a rhetoric way ... of course i collected for myself - but i am feeling more and more this is kind of sensless ...
and at the end everybody who is a collector is proud of his records - and likes it to impress some other collectors with his stuff - i made that experience for years - you should know what i mean ...
if there is a really nice girl in your flat - she would never look to your collection (normally) - and you would never have the need to show her your mint copy of OXO - because she would say. "ok, whats the matter with that boring looking record?"
but if another collector would be in your house, he would say "fucking hell, you have the OXO!!!"
and this would be a nice feeling for your ego, isnt it?
and: c'mon give me abreak - evrybody knows what the italians are paying for that records - peanuts...
there is no problem for me with that - but its just a fact that they are paying mostly peanuts for the old stocks.
NO DISCUSSION ABOUT THIS!!!!!!!!
in the words of FUGAZI:
"what does a businessman ever want more, than to have us sucking in his store?"
Why do you think there are there no girls around who are interested in your record collection?
They might care but not ask for details. Or are you interested in their handbag or shoes collection even though you like to see her dressed up.
It might be a little bit less nerdy (no girl will ever praise that 'ultra-rare' pair of Guccis from 2002) - but hey it's a sideof your personality.
I've found that girls generally aren't interested in records until they're on the turntable and music is coming out.
Edit: Boys too.
Be happy with what you got would be a first...

of course professional sellers make money with the records they sell on ebay. if there was no profit they wouldn't sell the stuff.
some make more and some make less money. always depends on their conncections and on the effort they are willing to expend.
and believe me the guy from stuttgart (that dolcevita was mentioning before) makes very good money. i met him several times in person.
for the first time on that warehouse sale in stuttgart. he was checking thousands of records there by using one of those rare record price guide books.
we were also talking about stuff like where he gets his records from and he told us that he once found a huge stock (just like dolcevita said).
but he also buys big collections and checks fairs on fridays (met him in utrecht and milan). so i guess it's almost a fulltime job for him.
at least he puts a lot of effort in finding new stocks and making new connections.
@ dolcevita
"if there is a really nice girl in your flat - she would never look to your collection (normally)"
-> hm, then maybe you invite the wrong girls to you flat! ever thought about that?
@ EliasRafael
"Why do you think there are there no girls around who are interested in your record collection?"
-> because normally girls are more interested in a big briefmarkensammlung, you know?
briefmarkensammlung = sausage ??
@ cebteq
some kind of...
okay then I'm covered
interesting, i know quite a few girls that are interested in record collections.. its not sucn a 100% male thing anymore, especially with the rising amount of female dj's...
and yes, its work to sell stuff via ebay or elsewhere. i'm doing the cd sale on discogs still, and sometimes there is quite a lot of work involved for a relatively small amount..so yes, these guys may make good money but its not like they dont do anything for it..
i think personally that the days you could find cheap italo's on every italian street corner is long over. sure, these sellers may buy collections and get things relatively cheap, but in italy they can read ebay, discogs and gemm listings too. last time i was there the italo records we found were as expensive as on the web (but we got some good deals thatns to fred ventura) and in the record fair in milano there was as much italo as here in utrecht and for the same prices.
i know thats hard to believe but its true.. ive had the same discussions with american collectors of dutch 60's beat music, who all thought you can find those old 7inches in every junk shop here for 10 cents. sure, maybe once in a while, but in general dutch collectable music is as expensive or hard to find here as anywhere else.

Good to know, because i was considering maybe visiting one this year.
well, i agree with Dolcevita...
its true that most of the italian sellers do not pay so much for the records...
italo is a perfect money machine since the world is hot for it (with the beginning of having internet
for everyone)....the dealers buy for cheap and try to make profit...
otherwise we talk about the rules of the market..so..
but hey, nowadays its not as easy as it was in the past...peanuts cannot be the right word..
the biggest problem for a seller could be that he must buy a bigger bunch of records (which includes
the rarities)....and who (except a wholeseller) would buy records for 4000-5000e (or more)?
see Mario for example...he acted that way...that means he must sell, sell, sell!
lots of work, ebay fees...and so on. in the end its ok when he makes some money.
without selling = no income = empty fridge!
well, the grab-for-cheap-market in italy is smaller nowadays...but still there is one.
after all...i never met an italian seller who paid much money for a single record -- just to sell it for a few more bucks..
an italian seller buys a rare record for 10-20e and sells for 500e, others (maybe guys like you and me or italoheaven)
buy for 300e and sell for 500e as well. who made the bigger profit? thats the difference.
and rude66, you already mentioned it...finding cheap italos on flea markets or fairs is harder than ever before...
a logical thing because most of the sellers on fairs are the same sellers on ebay.
the only positive side of it is that you can meet them personally and probably have a chance to work out better prices..
i know sellers as Discoldies (Luigi) or La Monaca (Roberto) since approx. 10 years now....
at the beginning they had funny and sweet record-prices ...those prices climbed up year by year...
about this feelings "should i sell or should i not sell"...oh yeah...nice story...
sometimes i did it for money -- and later i regretted so much...
its not easy to find the right decision...
years ago i had the chance to sell VENTURA for 700e....
i didn
