if you want to read superhero comics, read alan moore's top ten, watchmen, league of extraordinary gentlemen and also his swamp thing run if you can get it. that's pretty much all the superhero comics you need, but if you really want to read x-men then joss whedon's run on astonishing x-men is great (though runaways is the best marvel title atm imo). mark millar did two superhero comics called kick-ass and wanted which have both been made into films: the comics are way better. after that, warren ellis wrote a six issue series called black summer and an ongoing thing called gravel, both of which are gory and fast-paced black-humoured action shizzle.
