Re: New COCKpits & GearPics

owch!

I had a dsi evolver desktop (from the 2nd ever batch!) and never had a problem with those encoders, though it only had something like 8 of them... my biggest gripe was the density of the edit matrix, and then the damn shift key on top of that. That edit matrix was always messing me up.

The other day I fixed the rotary encoder action on my yamaha A5000 with a bunch of 1uf ceramic caps. Cost me less than $1/encoder to fix.. new encoders would have cost me about $15 each, all up.

Youre correct, the mono evolver desktop has no issues with encoders, it is only the PEK/MEK and P08R/P08K series that has it.

these pots are connected on the boards directly

Re: New COCKpits & GearPics

oh.... thats no good. MEK is on my to buy list one day. I like the idea of the same synth that was in my old evolver desktop, but with a few knobs for things, and an LCD menu system for other stuff.

Is that your knob board? and do you know how to solder? If so, try putting couple of caps across the output pins of a really bad encoder, and see if it gets any better. It worked wonders for my A5000. Its jumpy menu knobs made it totally unusable till I fixed them this way.

Re: New COCKpits & GearPics

It really sucks to hear that Davesmith is using the cheapest of the cheapest parts on his products. I was waiting to see how his new drum machine was going to turn out, but now hearing that he went dixx on his prophet 08 line has me wondering "no"/.

I really don't understand why someone would prefer a potentiometer instead of an encoder. You can tell the encoder to behave like a potentiometer. OK, maybe the knobs are ugly, but that's another thing.

Maybe what people dislike is that they have to tweak the knob more than they would on a potentiometer. But i guess you get used to the feel of the encoder very fast.

I'd take a pot over an encoder any day. it's just more direct. with those encoders you can't see what things are set to without looking at the display all the time. pots gives you a much better overview and direct interaction with the synth. but it's a question of user interface i guess.

Re: New COCKpits & GearPics

The encoders on the Nord G2 are definitely the best I've encountered.  Solid, smooth, and led-ringed.   You don't need to turn them 3 million times to sweep through a controls' full range of values either.  Pure joy to use.

Now that I think about it I'd definitely prefer encoders with an led-ring around them than encoders that are tied to a separate display.

Yes thats one of the 3 boards that are in the PEK for controls.

Its directly on the print, but i dont have skills to replace the encoders (there are way too many also hehe 70+ orso)
Too bad the P08PE, comes now, it should have been there from the start, Dave Smith has lost a lot of goodwill in the scene for current DSI PEK/MEK and PO8 owners...

I used DeoxIt on all encoders, it works (for now) Although I read a posting from a guy I know, who serviced his the same time (2 weeks before) as mine, and he has faulty enocoders popping up again sad

Well thats what you get for a 8/4voice analog poly for 2000 EUROs I guess, its too damn cheap for real quality smile

Re: New COCKpits & GearPics

If the basic cap fix that works with other flakey encoders will fix this, you'd be nuts not to try it out on a couple of bad ones.
