Re: Guilty Pleasures...

I don't really get this toppic. As I don't get the fact people could have something like a "guilty feeling" by loving a more commercial song  hmm  I mean if a song moves you in the good way, then it's a good song. No matter how rare, dark or super commercial it is.
Think people should lesser care what others may think or say about there musical taste, because that's really not what music is about..

But ok, I guess that's just another result of living in our society, with that "box mentality" and a need to be different then the herd..

Anyway, i think there are plenty of great songs/tracks in this toppic. Some nice discoveries also.  wink

hmm, don't want to become too "scientific" about guilty pleasures, however, it seems i have quite a different understanding of what a guilty pleasure is compared to what you describe.

for me a guilty pleasure is something that is one's "target" of two types of emotions at the same time: namely (a) the feeling that something is quite crappy and trashy, and (b) a feeling of love towards that thing.

the question whether or not something is "commercial" or "rare" to me has no direct link to whether or not someone regards something as guilty pleasure. there's of course the indirect link that a lot of commercial stuff is regarded as trash (as is a lot of rare stuff), though due to fact that - via mainstream media - there's more exposure to mainstream stuff than to rare stuff there's simply a higher probability that this commercial trashy stuff becomes the target of loving feelings as well, than is the case with rare trashy stuff.

probably failed with not sounding "scientific", so call this my theorem on guilty pleasures  wink

I have a feeling that the song is crappy and trashy, but I have a feeling of love towards those things that come out of her bathing suit

Mm, I think this could be indeed a good definition of a "musical Guilty pleasure", if that exists. Guess it all depends on how important this word is or could be for every individual..

I think that the "commercial" fact isn't really so "indirect" here. Especially on a forum where rare & pretty unknown music is the main theme... If we are really honnest, there is just only one toppic on this board where songs of Roxette, Chesney Hawkes, Meat Loaf, Olivia Newton john, Lady gaga, Mark Morisson, etc.. will appear. Those songs are technically and musically not that crappy or trash. I personnally think that people here "may" have the feeling that those songs are a "guilty pleasaure" because they are made for the big public, they are commercial, you here them everyday on the radio, they have not that magic, dark, rare or unknown thing.. On a board like this, it may be not that "cool" to like or collect that commercial stuff big_smile That's why I think it's more likely seen as a "guilty pleasure".

People aren't really here to discuss Meat Loaf and Roxette as a main thing, but some still love that songs, and so I don't think that they should have a "guilty feeling" about it. It sounds in a way like "a shame" to love those songs..

Don't get me wrong, I also lauched or had fun with some songs here, or dicovered other songs that I think are quite nice. It is just "weird" for me that so many people have "guilty musical pleasures".  I just don't really get that personally..
