Used to be a great fan of lego when I was a kid. Used to buy a lot of space theme-lego and built spaceships etc. with that. I even was proud enough to picture a moonbase I built then. Also visited a lego exhibition with my friend at a warehouse (V&D) then.
My old lego-collection (it's in the pot):

@ytz
Thanks. So you were more into robin hood/medieval lego? I was more into the space theme... Other kids were more into technical lego (with the holes in the blocks etc.).

One level in pacmania (block town) also has lego-surroundings. Used to play that on the Atari 520ST.

Here you can listen the commercial in the dutch version "van lego kun je alles maken". (can't find it on the tube except a wrong house-remix)

This commercial is from the 70's. Kinda nice

Erm, well I never bought my own. It was always christmas or birthday presents. I remember getting this huge Technics space ship/robot thing - like an AT-AT from star wars but on two legs - but it was too difficult for me.
Basically, I think the reason I got so much Lego was my dad loved making stuff with it as much as me

Yeah. I think I got most of the stuff as a present but I remember also buying some lego myself. I also remember when I was playing with lego with my friends. We threw all the lego on one big pile in the middle and did a coundown from 10 to 1 with the hands on our back... At the count of zero each grabbed as many lego as he could and tried to built something out of that of what he got (the one who got the most could build/or got the best opportunity to build the most beautiful thing). If you wanted one specific piece/block from someone else you could try to trade that from the other with some of your own. Memories...
That popup thing was totally unreal
Right now I have the pleasure to enjoy a lot of lego building with my son (2 years and 8 months old)
I build stuff and he plays with it/destroys it
We skipped the boring duplo and went for standard lego although he's not even 3 yet.
I am a bit conservative and prefer standard parts instead of special designed ones.
In my opinion it's more fun to figure out how to build a decent bulldozer out of standard parts than it is to just put an advanced x-wing fighter (priced EUR 150) together.
Sure you need some more parts than just bricks to be able to build interesting things, bur wheels, hinges and windows are all I need.
So far I've designed and built some creations that I'm quite please with.
Unfortunately they are often heavily modified or taken apart by my son before I manage to take a picture of them, but I'll post some pics later.
But again, when I see that japanese popup video I realize anything is possible...
Thanks for posting!
