nu rave or new rave is the accurate term imo.

Yea. I also remember a lot of similar situations. Once i was playing records with my friend on another friend's birthday party. a lot of "regular" folk at that party of course and we played pretty much something easily listenable house and disco.

Then this dude comes up who also was supposed to play some tracks, started a conversation with me about if i like electro. I was of course excited "Yeah yeah! Sure! My favourite genre etc."
Then the dude told me that yea he had a lot of Simian Mobile Disco records with him. "Coolest electro ever man!"

And i mean simian mobile disco ain't that bad, and they have definitely a lot of breakbeat tracks, but i'd never classify that as electro...
At least electro as in these "robot" circles.
