Re: Heavy Metal

Trying to lose some weight, so doing quite a bit of high intensity cardio... Perfect opportunity to listen to some all time favorite trash metal albums and some new found death metal stuff.
A fresh Stormbringer mix would be much appreciated too btw!

Re: Heavy Metal

Much appreciated! I do have ideas and music for more than one, it's a matter of actually getting down to business. Sigh...

Some of my favourites among the essential thrash are Exodus - Bounded By Blood, Kreator - Pleasure To Kill, Razor - Evil Invaders... But the list could be long. It's a nice Rabbit hole, for sure.

You've figured out some preferences? (perhaps an abstract question)

(I sometimes tend to frame music i listen to in some form of concept. Metal: The 80's, VHS slasher film, battle jackets, home-drawn demo covers etc. I prefer rough around the edges and not to overproduced - fells like a lot of the bands started in a garage in the 80's, but following success the sound got more clean and complex. Vocals can lift or drag down.)

Re: Heavy Metal

haha nice question, but a hard one to answer though.. i guess i prefer the more fast and raw stuff, especially for spinning excersises. I've just ordered the Kreator album you mentioned, will let you know!

Re: Heavy Metal

Surely hope you gave it a listen on YT before ordering, taste might differ!!! But yeah its a classic, the box art of DOOM (1993 game) bears a suspicious resemblance. Merciless - The Awakening is another gem on the harder death-thrash side, works while cutting grass - might work while spinning.

Re: Heavy Metal

Saw three dutch progressive black metal bands play live yesterday, was a good sunday afternoon programme.

Loved the post-rocky opening band:

This band was headlining, more hardcore, but supersolid live.

Ok not heavy metal as such, more oldschool hardrock, but this was hugely influental on young Starbo.. I grew up in a christian (ex-)hippie household, my dad involved in the organization of NL's biggest and perhaps only christian music multiple day summer festival. Which meant I spent alll summers of my childhood there, two weeks on a field playing with kids while our parents were building and breaking a festival and i I was enjoying 4 days of music in the middle, This performance was in the summer of 1990, I had just turned 10... Remember it so vividly, and was lucky enough to get a picture with the artist the next day.

Re: Heavy Metal

That's awesome! The summers vacation as a kids sure was special (same age as you). Before internet the world felt bigger and stuff had more weight, whereas nowadays you can get any film, music or videogame online in a couple of minutes. I used to love martial art films and those often had music like the track you posted.

Your dad still around? He's still into metal?

Re: Heavy Metal

Yeah I am lucky to still have my father around, who's halfway his 70s and more into blues and bluesrock really, with a dash of bluesy hard rock. He actually got his 70s cover band back on the road for a few years now, and whenever the bandmembers are not in the hospital they play together hehehe.

Have you read Max, Mischa and the Tet Offensive by Johan Harstad? That really nails growing up in the 80s and 90s so well. Much recommended.

That youtube docu on trash made me order the first Venom album btw. Funnily enough, the 80s Venom albums were circulating in my old church scene.. so evil it was exciting contraband tongue

Heresy... Heresy.

Edit: Nice to hear! The contraband parable made me laugh out loud. I can imagine that album was 'hot stuff to handle' with it's album cover. Personally I'm not to found of the the whole devil thingy, but I guess it's part of the concept. A metaphor for outsider culture or something (in most cases).
