Topic: House Music's Obsession with Itself

I was chatting to a friend about this over at the Necroparty and have been meaning to ask the robots what they think about it.
I dunno, but I can't think of a sound that is as obsessed with itself as house. In countless house tracks the word "house" is used. It seemed the artists were absolutely fixated with the term. But, I've heard that a lot of house musicians were not happy with the label and saw it as too vague and all encompassing tag for all dance records that came out at the time. Nevertheless, most house artists seem to have clung quite ferociously to the word.

I'm just wondering if you think it is a case of ensuring a new label on a new brand or style of music? Was it the almost egocentric and masculine nature of house music that drove it to this constant self reference? Or was it pressure from labels to brand the new genre with an easy record store category?

I just seems quite strange that a style of music would forever remind the listener of what they were listening to. It seems unimaginable of pop records using the term "pop" over and over again.

Maybe I have too much time on my hands here, just curious.

interesting...i suppose it was also marketing. it's sounds also cool in spelling. here ( and  suppose not only here ) all the big blink blink clubbers are listening to HOUSE music...for them All is House music ( wish they ever knew which is house music for real ).

Re: House Music's Obsession with Itself

dunno its about marketing, most terms and names for music-styles just pop-up before there is any marketing or commercial value. Maybe the best names for marketing will survive (for instance: Rhtyhm & Blues vs Rock n Roll).. I guess 'House' is the same 'category/collective-noun' as 'Rock' containing various subgenres.
In the beginning using the word house was similar for a musical revolution, now its maybe more nostalic or 'classic/oldschool' smile

Re: House Music's Obsession with Itself

Supposedly the name "house" came generally from the venues it was played in, house parties, warehouse parties and The Powerhouse in Chicago. I think anyway.

Just start to chase your dreams
Up out your seats, make your body sway
Socialize, get down, let your soul lead the way
Shake it now, go ladies, it's a livin' dream
Love Life Live
Come play the game, our world is free
Do what you want but scream

We know a place where the nights are hot
It is a house of funk
Females and males
Both headed all for the disco

The D.J. plays your favorite blasts
Takes you back to the past, music's magic (poof)
Bump bump bump get bump with some flash, people

Rock rock to the Planet Rock, don't stop
Rock rock to the Planet Rock, don't stop

The Soul Sonic Force - Mr. Biggs, Pow Wow, and M.C. Globe
We emphasize the show, we got ego
Make this your night, just slip it right, and by day
As the people say, live it up, shucks
No work or play, our world is free
Be what you be - be

Rock rock to the Planet Rock, don't stop
Rock rock to the Planet Rock, don't stop

You're in a place where the nights are hot
Where nature's children dance and set a chance
On this Mother Earth, which is our rock
The time has come, and work for soul, show you really got soul
Are you ready hump bump bump, get bump, now let's go, house

Twist and turn, the you let your body slide
You got the body rock and pop, bounce and pounce
Everybody just rock it, don't stop it
Gotta rock it, don't stop
Keep tickin' and tockin', work it all around the clock

Everybody keep rockin' and clockin' and shockin' and rockin', go house
Everybody say, rock it, don't stop it (Crowd repeats)
Well hit me, Mr. Biggs (Crowd repeats)

Re: House Music's Obsession with Itself

its all so simply. in many house tracks , vocals are simply made to support the rhythm. terms like "house" and "jack" are short and can use perfect as rhythm "instrument". in some ghetto house tracks "house" is removed by "bitch" or "ass" or stuff....

Re: House Music's Obsession with Itself

Well, House music's obsession with itself is OK with me considering it has evolved (and sometimes devolved) over 25+ years, as opposed to Minimal's obscene narcissism over 3-4 years...

what about the word ACID?
many acid house tracks using it as well wink

Re: House Music's Obsession with Itself

Talking about early house tracks. House was a new thing and the makers were proud of that so what's more logical than put the name of this into your song. Could be a marketing thing, like putting house on the map by proclaming this term "house" in the song. Could be, in te beginning, because of the short time samplers could record back then. House is short and used easily rhytmathically like for instance in: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oX7zzFMsuFs

As house grew bigger and became more commercial it surely was a marketingtool or a way of giving the artist some house-credits within the song itself as being house.

Don't know if this is typical for house b.t.w. What about: rock, disco, funk, hardcore etc. All these terms are used zillions of times in music proclaming this or that genre. It's just used to celebrate a style of music.

Re: House Music's Obsession with Itself

why do so many house songs mention jacking then?  your analysis is wrong

Re: House Music's Obsession with Itself

To jack is a way of dancing to house music. It's another word in the house-vocabulary (can't think of many more right now, to be honest). If "jack" is used in a track it proclaims that way of dancing to house music. It doesn't contradict my analysis, I think. It's all to emphasize the house music-style.

It was not the first intension ofcourse. I think it was more to make people jack/dance on the dancefloor. But obviously the houseartists succeeded in putting the term "jacking" and maybe even this way of dancing on the map.

Trying to analyse music labels has something obsessive, I agree. Excuse me for trying! wink

I can live with that.
