Topic: usb turntables

i have a traditional record player but am thinking of getting this ION: www.ionaudio.com/iptusb#

i like that it has the digital interface, is small, and has built-in audio and output connection. my current player needs an amp+speakers to work. so its a little rough connecting it to my PA each time.

has anyone used these and heard the sound quality? what do you think?

Re: usb turntables

You gonna listen music on pc speakers then now or something?

Re: usb turntables

perfect for scene release flacs

Re: usb turntables

Do any of these actually sound good or are built well? Do you just use whatever cartridge you want?

I've considered getting one for convenience but all the ones I've seen look flimsy and crap.

Re: usb turntables

I think a normal SL with a good sound card and some kind of phono amp (mixer or amp) in between will sound way better

Re: usb turntables

Yeah that's what I'm thinkin' too.

Re: usb turntables

yeah, i just want to listen to records direct through my computer speakers (decent Altec Lansing ones)
instead of having to connect my current player through a receiver and speakers with RCA cables, etc..

Re: usb turntables

I heard the USB 1.0 soundcard circuits used in all the USB turntable are the same and all sound thin and distorted, so even if the the table itself was decent it would still sound bad.

Re: usb turntables

if you need a high quality phono preamp check out the Hagerman Bugle.. its a really nice "audiophile" design with ultra flat frequency response.  you can get kits on ebay for like $60.  runs on batteries or 15v power supply (kits also available for power) and it sounds _awesome_

Re: usb turntables

That thing looks badass and is probably way better than my NAD phono pre. Too bad I'm completely not handy.

You can use a small mixer and put the line out to the line in of the soundcard so you can listen to it on the computer (and sample/record it etc.)

Re: usb turntables

I was wondering, can't you connect your turntable trough the mic in on your computer? that has a preamp of it's own...

But agree with smackos: use a mixer or amplifier and a normal decent turntable

Nah they still use different amplifying levels for the volume it won't sound good

Behringer USB interface 25 pounds and you can connect existing turntables to computer just like that.

there is a filtering process done at the plant when pressing the vinyl. this is then reversed at the phono input. Known as RIAA equalization. a straight pre will just sound thin and shitty without the eq.

Re: usb turntables

you do NOT want to buy these things. they sound shit and cheap as hell.. for that price, buy an old normal turntable and a preamp. or for a little more money, there are plenty of dj turntables now that have normal line outs..

Re: usb turntables

@ronin & Smackos: cool, always wondered about mic / phono but never actually tried out. Some days you just won't stop learning.

@Rude: probably the next marketing trick? first make crappy ones and then better ones... talking about marketing, you can find turntables at hema and supermarkets nowdays! it's getting all hip again (in mediamarkt rijswijk they even had 7 different models)

Re: usb turntables

those Hagerman yokes look good (http://hagtech.com/), might try one when i get chance

Re: usb turntables

They are a bag of shite!

Re: usb turntables

So I got the Behringer usb interface and have it connected to my Macbook and have my turntable RCA cables coming to the inputs but I don't hear any sound. What am I missing? Do I need to connect it through a mixer as well?

Re: usb turntables

does your interface have a preamp?
or more importantly a phono preamp?

Re: usb turntables

if it's the behringer usb interface featured above them i'm pretty sure it DOES NOT feature a phone preamp.
that thing is built for handling line level sources so you're still going to have to go through a phono preamp of some description.

Re: usb turntables

perhaps try one of these (first four items are suited to your application)

Re: usb turntables

ah ok, so the turnable would connect to the preamp - the preamp to the behringer - the behringer to my computer and then should i be able to use my computer sound ouput with my speakers? or do i need the sound output coming from the behringer to the speakers?
