Topic: Vocal choir kind of synth (as used by Raiders of the Lost ARP)

Where did Mr. Raiders of the Lost ARP get those vocal choir "ahhhhh" sounds that are all over his "4" album? (on the Arrival track for example). I hear them in a few other places but that album is the best example of them. Sounds a bit smooth and new to be a Mellotron, perhaps I'm wrong though!

Re: Vocal choir kind of synth (as used by Raiders of the Lost ARP)

Any rompler/workstation will have those sounds, its probably a Roland JV-something or Korg M1 05 or something like that.

Re: Vocal choir kind of synth (as used by Raiders of the Lost ARP)

perhaps kurzweil?

Re: Vocal choir kind of synth (as used by Raiders of the Lost ARP)

yeah, i also have them oooohs &  aaaahhs on one of the korg DSM1 factory Disks

Re: Vocal choir kind of synth (as used by Raiders of the Lost ARP)

are any of those romplers any good or are you better off getting a sampler and loading your own waveforms?

Re: Vocal choir kind of synth (as used by Raiders of the Lost ARP)

workstations have some crazy ahhhhs and ooohhhs but they ain't cheap

Re: Vocal choir kind of synth (as used by Raiders of the Lost ARP)

Romplers are like real synths most of the time (and also sometimes way more interesting then the same old analog VA synths which all sound the same)...their synthesis can go really deep (like the Kurzweil or GEM S2/S3 turbo)

Some old workstations are dirt cheap (especially the minimilized rack versions withouth the bells) like the Korg 05RW, JV880 etc people are giving that stuff away for free sometimes...
There is also a microkorg version of the Triton which is not that expensive second hand

Some other nice cheap rompler synths which have those choirs are the Yamaha CS1X (which is the same engine as the RM1X I believe), Korg N5 etc.

Re: Vocal choir kind of synth (as used by Raiders of the Lost ARP)

i don't know what the ooh's and aaaah's in the raiders tracks are, but i love my EMU proteus and its choirs.
also my ensonic ASR's voder disk has great vocoderish choirs.

Re: Vocal choir kind of synth (as used by Raiders of the Lost ARP)

my eps16+ came with some good choir disks

how do the romplers work. some of the sounds are great and very complicated sounding.  not just sample playback as the sounds seem more advanced than that.

maybe he sings them

Roland Jv2080

S+S synths work on recorded waveforms in some cases multisamples too, powerful software envelopes, LFO's and filters and efx.  Usually with multi-step ADSR's

Re: Vocal choir kind of synth (as used by Raiders of the Lost ARP)

Just use samples with some software sampler

Re: Vocal choir kind of synth (as used by Raiders of the Lost ARP)

Romplers work in all kinds of manner, there are romplers that will just play some multilayered PCM rom waves through an envelope and LFO (Like the Roland U220/U110 and older Proteus from early 90s), there are those which do complex multi vector cross modulating layering through all kinds of weird dimensional filters (like the morpheus) or use their ROM waves with all sorts of other synthesis (like FM or VA or some kind of physcical modelling Like the Yamaha SY99, Kurzweil and higher level Korgs).

I don't know why people always hate on these things...They are for example more interesting for sound design then the usual analog synths which have a very limited sound pallette

Don't hate em just been waiting for them to become Cheap cheap cheap..

Yep, got this on my JV1080 too.
Great!

Re: Vocal choir kind of synth (as used by Raiders of the Lost ARP)

The rompler I've wanted for a while the JD990 is on its way.

Re: Vocal choir kind of synth (as used by Raiders of the Lost ARP)

I use this : http://syntheway.com/choir.htm

I think it's funny to see all this rompler love, for me plug-ins cover that whole palette of cold sounds/bad editing fully without the need for more gear, and I'm sure you'll agree those romplers are not the prettiest things to have around.

they are hated because of their interfaces, not their sound possibilities. a lot of these synths are incredibly powerful, yet such a pain in the ass to program on miniature displays that most people don't bother. even something like my kawai k5000 (oi think you had one too) which has a bigger display) is a real bitch to edit once you get past the initial simple settings like filter cutoff..
editing software like midiquest is almost a must there..

Re: Vocal choir kind of synth (as used by Raiders of the Lost ARP)

Yeah The K5000 was a bitch to program even with software (but you tend to get that with additive synthesis with 99999999 sine waves) but something like the JD990 was super easy on the LCD screen, pilkes be sure to get the vintage card with your JD...i sold mine 2 years ago thinking i would buy a JD800 but then I heard you couldn't put the cards into the JD800? I need a JD990 again

I agree with that. A good D/A converter on the sound card also helps, and routing the output through an outboard filter and analogue desk shaves the cold edge off imho, if that's the intention of course.
