I think it's funny to see all this rompler love, for me plug-ins cover that whole palette of cold sounds/bad editing fully without the need for more gear, and I'm sure you'll agree those romplers are not the prettiest things to have around.
I agree with that. A good D/A converter on the sound card also helps, and routing the output through an outboard filter and analogue desk shaves the cold edge off imho, if that's the intention of course.
I dunno about that, my JD990 sounded more deeper and "warmer" whatever that is then a lot of the cheaper analogs I have. And why is it funny? Romplers are synths like any other
I've been looking into romplers lately on my quest for a decent 61-key keyboard controller. Seems like a cost effective way to get some decent keys with an interesting synth thrown in. I mean, I'd rather spend $300ish on something fun like a K4 or an M1 than some piece of crap M-audio junk.
And I'm probably showing my age, but I still can't beleieve that you can get a K2000 for less than $400 now. That's a lot of synth for the money.
i found kawai k1 to be most useful when it comes to choirs
and that one is as cheap as it gets
I think it's funny because what was once uninteresting gear becomes interesting again.
I've heard so much bad opinions on romplers that I wasn't expecting them to generate a newer wave of interest.
I used to work for an artist who did installations using the JV1080 for all sounds, it sounded like total crap.
The Korg Legacy digital edition is pretty cool with the Wavestation and M1 though.

sure, they are synth like any other, as well as software ones i guess... not arguing with that. i simply find that when it comes to digital, in my case especially wavetable or rompler synths, i can achieve amazing results using a computer, reaktor and beefing up the sound through an external pedal or filter, again, to take a bit of the coldness off. found that even an overdrive pedal used sparsely can help achieving that. No need to cram the studio or the racks...
no questions about the love of the gear, I agree with tony that romplers don't look and feel (phisically) all that appealing, but i understand the love for them the jd800 does't actually look bad at all but who cares anyway
e-mu vintage keys also has a bunch of choirs
i wish I lived around cool mfs like yall!
@tony cops: of course this happens. it happens to everything.. these machines are now old enough to be vintage. and as a lot of people were exploring analogues when these came out, they now come across these things. we are just running 20 years behind the times..:D
@cimabot: but what else are you going to put in your racks? thats what theyre for!
What trend? Wtf are you talking about
Yesterday's trash is tomorrow's flash...
Ok let me just point out that not all of us are using state of the art computers. Sometimes its good to have a source of sounds that are fully editable and controllable, plus have their own Efx and outs that don't tax your processor. Sure you can do it all in the computer but these boxes are the result of huge investment by the companies that built them and just work. That in its self is a good reason to use romplers from time to time. They aint pretty but they are a Swiss army knife in the studio arsenal.
And seeing that you can pick them up for peanuts its pretty amazing. I remember looking in magazines in the 90's wishing I had enough money to get one.. Now seeing as a 80's Roland monosynth will set you back up to
Yeah The K5000 was a bitch to program even with software (but you tend to get that with additive synthesis with 99999999 sine waves) but something like the JD990 was super easy on the LCD screen, pilkes be sure to get the vintage card with your JD...i sold mine 2 years ago thinking i would buy a JD800 but then I heard you couldn't put the cards into the JD800? I need a JD990 again
what does the vintage card do? give you new waveforms or just new patches?
Tons of new waveforms and patches. You can go listen on synthmania. Will be getting one pretty quick after my JD gets here. And vintage is the board not the card, the string ensemble one is a card I believe.
ah yeah, but the JD800 only reads the cards and you can't install the boards on them right?
k1 rocks http://www.synthmania.com/Kawai%20K1m/A … ngment.mp3
Cool! Guess they used it on this one:

FS: Kawai K1 Classic Detroit rompler. Mint condition. $999 US or trade for TR-808 plus cash.
What trend? Wtf are you talking about
there isn't one. just smackos on a one man mission!
but keep discussing anyways...happy times for rompler ebay sellers
ah yeah, but the JD800 only reads the cards and you can't install the boards on them right?
The 990 has a slot for a PCM card and a data card. Are these different cards then the ones you can use on the 800?
was listening to capercaille , as you do, and theres a track called callanish, picts, celts on the blood is strong album. it could almost be a mad mike/ur track, full of ambient pads, pan pipes etc. is this korg m1 sounds? its how i imagine an m1 might sound but have never played one. the breathy pan pipe sound is pretty famous, i can't think where i've heard it before, maybe the crocodile dundee soundtrack or something. i'm sure some clever robot will know. i'm sure its rompler sounds anyway

That choir vst sounds pretty cool from the demos, shame for me that its windows only though
on the topic of vocal choirs... which ones of those old synths/string machines/organs has them? any of the roland rs machines?
like those sounds on a.t.r.o.x. - against the odds or ak47 - hilversum ao
just out of curiousity and greed for knowledge... i know there are easier ways to get the sounds
