Topic: Mixing inna sleng teng style
Any idea what mixer he's using here?
sounds like it has a hi-pass filter or something.
You can see it after about 3:05 min.

i think he just cuts the bass out
ah, i see...
ok then, any idea what old mixers that has such an exstreme EQ?
My Vestax pmc-05 really sucks eq-wise.
Ah Cutty Ranking, second perhaps only to Supercat in the late 80s dancehall pantheon. In terms of mixers all the reggae and dancehall soundsystems and studios were built from homemade analogue equipment with loads of tube amps etc. Its part of the reason why reggae/early dancehall sounds so nice.
I reckon the mixer's probably a home or local made one as well. For the effect I think he's just turning the volume up and down so the song cuts out rhythmically.
the background loop sounds familiar. like a preset pattern from some crappy toy synth from my childhood. hmm...
Yep, it's the Rock preset from the Casio MT40. It was often used by others, 2 Live Crew for instance used it on 'Reggae Joint', but by then the preset was already nicknamed the 'sleng teng' preset.
Edit: it was apparently first used in Wayne Smith's 'Under me Sleng Teng', hence the nickname for the preset (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sleng_Teng)
As for the filtering sound, if you don't wanna change mixers (any mixer with a parametric eq can do this), it can also be done by some external filter effect thingy, like perhaps those Korg Kaospads.
Yeah, it's probably a homemade or modified mixer.
King Jammy made some crazy equipment.
I would love to have his old mixer.
