I was able to get some of my gear because of them but they fuckin' suck.
The one in particular that's a pain in my ass at the moment is a Chase card. Don't consider them, even if they approve you.

i got an email last week from the company that has my student loans (sallie mae) and they were pushing some new credit card you can get while you are a student. Every time you spend money at "typical" college student places like iTunes, The Gap, Starbucks, etc they will put money towards paying off your loans. Of course if you do the math on interest rates, it quickly cancels out any money they help pay off.

And then there is a very likely opportunilty to have your card drained by some carders from africa. With the amount of credit card fraud I have been facing at work (basically reviewing orders placed online with a hosting company), no way I will ever be getting a proper credit card. There's a really huge amount of fraud going on. Comparable to like half of all online orders in certain market sectors.

Th fucked up part of living in the U.S. (not sure how it is in other countries) is that in order to make bigger purchases you need to have credit established, so it's hard to get around it. It's a double-edged sword.
think in usa is it much more normally to take credits as well as living with credit cards...
credit sucks in general, think it's better to have the money for next purchase

Fuck yeah... I try to avoid using one as much as possible, but like communicator said you have to in some cases.
Now to buy gear... I probably wouldn't do that, but I did just use it get a new futon bed thing.

Credit score / history is some of the most orwellian bullshit the US ever came up with. Corporation sharing data about you that they should never have had access to in the first place.
I hate this whole system based on debt, living on what you don't have. Want to go to college? An affordable place to live? A car? Mortgage baby! It's the american way. Plus, it's good for the economy and gives you a reason to wake up in the morning. We don't want you slacking around, back to work for the next 20+ years.

but i can see some serious cracks in that system. look at all the banks stumbling and falling, not only in the US
I don't have any credit cards. Student loans are enough debt for me. Sometimes I think about faking my own death to escape them like Homer Simpson always does.
I have a very limited credit on my visa. That works.
My debit card doesnt charge me any extras for any operation. I guess you have to find the best deal in the worst scenario.
Never had any credit cards, never want too, i actually listened to my parents when they told me never to get one.
Know so many people who wish they had never got one, including my girlfriend whos still paying one off after 6 odd yrs.
But as said by statiq above, its stupid, ive been turned down from wanting a little loan or overdraft to pay my rent and eat, and turned down by landlords because i have bad credit. All because ive never borrowed, why isnt it a good sign if youve never borrowed, its the wrong way round.

true......same here........use it and pay at the end of the month and there are no troubles what so ever.
I love my MasterCard, without it recordshopping would be difficult.
I remember ther was a hacker who discovered a huge fault in the CB/Visa system. I don't remember his name...
With a simple shop terminal he was able to create a visa card that works everywhere, with any code, without removing any money from any bank account.
It was just written "Code Ok - Payment agreed" everywhere: shops, cash machines... He tried to sell his secret to the international Visa group, but they preferred to put him in prison rather to know what's about the famous fault...
probably because it would be a huge investment to totally rebuild the whole visa system.

Funny...I said the same thing around 1995 - 8 years after Malta got out of 16 years of strict Socialist rule and people were told to spend carelessly. Now that the credit crunch has hit the island, everyone's in a blind panic about how to maintain their comfy debt-based fakeass lifestyles.
