Topic: JX3P and Boss Dr 550mk2 sync

Hi there, just got this drum machine for free from a friend and looking to sync it up with my JX3P, I have only recently got the synth and don't really know much about midi, I can get the JX to control the drum machine but can't sync it to the sequencer of the JX, any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated! The drum machine only has a midi in socket.

thanks

Re: JX3P and Boss Dr 550mk2 sync

The sequencer on the JX-3p is clocked by the seq in 1/4in jack on the back of the synth not midi. you need a regular sound like a rimshot or some other trig pulse to make the sequencer advance.

I think that the Dr550mkii only has midi in and does not send midi sync anyway. So perhaps not the Drum machine you need to run the sync of the JX-3p. Its a slave drum machine and with 2 outputs is ok for jamming but perhaps getting something with more outs would be better. A Roland R8 or a cheap MPC is a good investment.

If you are running a computer setup with a soundcard with multiple outputs, you can set up a trigger sound (eg. a rimshot or a sample of a trig sound) on an audio channel of your Sequencer Just set it to 8th notes or 16ths and the sequencer will be in time, just route it to one of the outs connect a lead and k'blamm cheap sync.. (remember to mute it in the main mix.)

Re: JX3P and Boss Dr 550mk2 sync

Or Get your hands on a 707. This has trigger out to run the JX3P and has midi and sync out..

Re: JX3P and Boss Dr 550mk2 sync

Thanks for the comments guys, I knew a roland drum machine was what I really needed, but was just hoping this free one could be of use. Will just be syncing with ableton and drum samples till I can find a fairly priced 707 or other roland drum machine.

Re: JX3P and Boss Dr 550mk2 sync

or maybe this ghetto solution:
if that Boss drum machine has a pan setting you could bounce the sounds to the right (mono) output  & use a rimshot sound on the left output for syncing your JX

Re: JX3P and Boss Dr 550mk2 sync

Well you could use the Boss drum machine in another way. Pan all the drum sounds to the far left apart from the sound that you want for a trigger sound pan that to the far right in the drum machine. Split the stereo lead and plug the right into the sync in and you have a Field dressing trigger!

The TR626 has all the outs you need and is cheaper that the 707

or you cold get one of these..

MS06

Cheaper than a 707 and sets you up to use din sync for 606/808/ect

Re: JX3P and Boss Dr 550mk2 sync

I like the way your ghetto mind works. I used to do things like that too with a 505 which didn't have pan and snare drums. Somehow I'd sync up a Boss Dr-55 through it's step input. Also try plugging in any audio out into a filter control input on an analogue synth, it works nicely like ring mod!

Re: JX3P and Boss Dr 550mk2 sync

cheap drum machines they sound better in Mono.. usually
@leftcorporation: what did you send to trigger the DR-55?? i never managed to do it with mine..

Re: JX3P and Boss Dr 550mk2 sync

Okay it was a long time ago and I may have been confusing things. But the way I did it was to write the pattern on the DR-55. Advance forward till I was back at the start then plug in a drum machine like a TR-707/606 or DR220A/E trigger out into the Footswitch on the right hand side of it. It kind of worked.

Re: JX3P and Boss Dr 550mk2 sync

Okay forgot to mention. You have to have the DR-55 in the write mode for that to work.

Re: JX3P and Boss Dr 550mk2 sync

@leftcorporation

but the snare didn't sound right did it? when i do this 'trick' the snare sounds longer, like when you hold it down while programming. i guess this makes perfect sense if the foot switch is just for advancing thru steps. maybe i'll get better results if i sample a trigger and fiddle around with the length or pitch..

Re: JX3P and Boss Dr 550mk2 sync

I think the snare is probably a tad too long. You want a sound that's as close to short and sharp click. Maybe a Rimshot? Play around with the length and pitch i would say. If you have a oscilloscope or something similar it would help.
