with my personal tracks i'm also in the same boat about mixing, i just keep fussing with my post EQing and what not but i'm having a hard time finding consistency (granted my dated computer is also holding me back). sometimes there just never seems to be an end to the mixing yet other times certain recordings will go super easy with just some basic technique such as cut the middle frequencies and raise the lows and highs and nothing else too fancy. 

so for me the thing is i don't want to treat all of my recordings the same necessarily but it'd sure be nice to figure out a more definitive techniques to work by regularly.

@ AudaxPowder: good to hear I am not the only one struggling with the mix :-). What I often do is play some of my favourite tunes when a song is finished and try to get equal bass / mid / high because my monitors are a bit biased I think.
